And longstanding patron of the charity, former Blue Peter action man, Peter Duncan, is hoping the new musical will find young stars of the future in this three-day production at the Lyric, again featuring the creative talents of Belfast singer-songwriter Duke Special and Derry stand-up comedian, Andrew Doyle.

While Paperboy was set in 1975 when the author had just turned 12 and had bagged himself a new job selling the Belfast Telegraph, Breadboy takes place in 1977. The Troubles are still raging around him but the author has been ‘headhunted’ and is now working as a breadboy in the last Ormo mini-shop, delivering bread to the residents of the Upper Shankill on Saturday mornings. What's so great about these stories is their local flavour but with universal appeal," says the former daredevil of Duncan Dares fame who now runs his own adventure travel company, The Natural Adventure Company. A final day of auditions will also be held at the Spectrum Centre, Shankill Road, and Falls Road Leisure Centre in West Belfast on February 18. You may also find there is a section called 'Clearance' on breadboyclothing.com. Just as its name implies, you can buy many discounted products in this section. And don't worry, these items are unrivaled in both variety and quality. Their parents may have lived through the Troubles, but the young performers learned how to bring that time authentically to the stage.

One song, in particular, is the perfect disco tune, I think. It’s called Disco Days and to me, it’s a hit song.Tony coaches a youth empowerment project in the slums in Kampala, Uganda and is on the steering group developing a Rwanda Peace & Reconciliation Centre. It was on a visit to Kigali in 2017 that he met Juvens Nsabimana co-author of his latest book Kill the Devil: A Love Story from Rwanda. Tony explains: Their roles came to the fore in the show within a show. Tony's school was putting on West Side Story and he vied for the lead with his rival in romance, tall, English Tim (Sam Downey). Including so much of one of the 20th century's best musicals was a bold, risky move. There's A Place For Us streamed out and the cast's voices seemed most confident when singing about the Jets and the Sharks. Specialising in creating new music theatre, BYMT works with leading industry professionals to offer high-quality training for young singers, actors, dancers and musicians as well as emerging artists and stage technicians. Platinum-selling local singer/songwriter Duke Special and Derry-born comedian Andrew Doyle will be part of the creative team bringing Macaulay’s much-loved memoir to life. Both worked on Paperboy too, with Duke Special, aka Peter Wilson, composing the music and Doyle writing the lyrics. Breadboy' is a strongly autobiographical novel, in which Tony Macaulay recollects his years as a teenager in Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1977-1979. The novel is the follow-up of 'Paperboy', but can easily be read on its own.

At BYMT we develop talent and grow creativity to the highest level, for our 2022 summer season we are looking for fierce actors, singers and musicians. BYMT offers young performers the rare opportunity to gain experience in a professional environment before entering the industry as an adult.” The British Youth Music Theatre, the leading music theatre company for young people, is set to return with a musical adaptation of Tony Macaulay’s second memoir Breadboy. When BYMT did Paperboy [focusing on Macaulay's life as a 12-year-old infatuated with Doctor Who and the Bay City Rollers], the kids knew all the history of Belfast and knew how their characters fitted into it and I think that's important," he adds. Yes, Breadboy was turning out to be a bit of a stale read. That is, until the 70% location of the Kindle version. For suddenly, at about the 70% location of the story, the writing started sounding like it was written by the author who wrote the first book! It became funny and touching and just written a whole lot better. That last 30% made me love this second book almost as much as the first. Apart from incorporating Kipling's If into the narrative, Andrew Doyle turns a mean lyric. He rhymed the teenage angst of "She doesn't know that I exist..." with "vivisectionist" and got decent mileage from Belfast idioms.BYMT really caters for ages 11 to 21, but even at primary school there is a great role for drama," he says. "I think schools, generally speaking, could do more to 'big up' the arts within an educational setting. It was such a privilege to be part of this amazing project. The entire creative team especially the young cast were phenomenal. I am delighted that BYMT has decided to bring Breadboy to stage for their new season. Tony Macaulay, the writer of Breadboy, said: “Everyone involved in the musical adaptation for Paperboy was overwhelmed by the reception it received over the past two years. British Youth Music Theatre search for Breadboy and young people aged 11-21yrs for the next exciting 2022 Summer Season of new musical theatre There are lots of talented people who for various reasons can't or don't make it to drama school or stage school, so BYMT is another route in. It gives young people a chance - and you discover bright, new talent along the way."
