Description

I’ve been reviewing protein bars long enough to know that the bars won’t actually look like that, but that is just too enticing to pass up.

Dark Chocolate Raspberry was a flavor I have always wanted to have. Nugo Slim brand has them, but they are not vegan, so I was super excited to try these. This flavor is arguably the most true to it’s name – it has an incredibly strong raspberry flavor paired with the basic chocolate, and it was enjoyable. Chocolate Banoffee is perfect for people who like banana flavor. I personally do not like banana flavor (I never liked banana laffy taffy or banana candy of any type either), but those who do will love this flavor because it’s chocolate, caramel-ly banana. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the timing of consuming protein pre or post-workout, but the experts are in agreement that it doesn’t matter exactly when you eat it. The best protein bars offer a convenient way to top up essential nutrients when on the move – but from the multitude of brands and flavours out there, how can you tell which taste great, are healthy enough to eat regularly and deliver the protein punch you need?White Chocolate Cookie Butter took a couple of bars for me to taste the cinnamon flavor. It’s very light like some other flavors, and I do not enjoy it as much as the regular chocolate speculoos. I enjoy it’s light cinnamon-y flair to finish the case, but I will probably stop at the case. Unfortunately, finding the perfect vegan protein bar is not as easy as it sounds. Many vegan protein bars overpromise and underdeliver. They may even be unhealthy. Birthday Cake Misfits protein bar is also high on my list because of it’s uniqueness, flavor, and enjoyment. There are a few other brands with cake flavor, but they are pretty disappointing for me. When you first bite into this Misfits flavor, I do admit it’s kind of confusing. The gooey layer is fruit flavored (not sure what exactly), so at first I questioned the birthday-cake-ness. After trying a couple more times, the taste of cake does come through, but it’s again unique in a great way. Minimum life based on 'use-by' date of product. The Shredder Bar is the brainchild of social media influencer and sustainable fitness entrepreneur Grace Beverley and her team at SHREDDY. Their goal was to develop a vegan protein bar that didn’t taste chalky.

Based on the photos, I just couldn’t help myself. I mean, you look at the below product photo and try to tell me that it’s not one of the most delicious-looking protein bars you’ve ever seen: us.misfits.health Flavors range from basic chocolate (dark chocolate brownie) to unique flavors like birthday cake. Each flavor is equally sweet and overall, I like most of the bars. I am not a huge fan of sweet, and these are definitely sweet, but I balance it with Nugo Slims bars (they only have mint and peanut flavors, though) which are much less sweet. These remind me of some of the main things people look for in candy bars but with different macros. The only caveat I have for overall flavor is some flavors taste similar or do not taste like what they are marketed as – we will get to that. General Texture of Misfits Protein Bars

How can I be so sure? Because, doing the R&D process for the Human Food Bar I taste tested and carefully studied over 100 protein and nutrition bars (and yes, it’s an obsession). To answer that, the first thing to understand is just why eating protein is as important as drinking water. “Protein plays a functional or structural role in all our cells,” explains Tom Clifford, a sports nutritionist and lecturer in physiology and nutrition at Loughborough University. “It’s principally involved in growth and repair, but it provides us with energy, too” Chocolate Peanut is lower on this list because it’s a standard/basic flavor. It’s not bad, but I did not love it. If you want chocolate and peanuts, that’s what you get with this bar – with plenty of sweetness to boot.

This bar is near the top of the list as it’s the best balance of taste and protein content, with as few additives as possible. It contains 20g of plant-based protein (from soy protein isolate) and a fairly natural ingredients list including unsweetened chocolate, organic soy and rice flour, cane sugar and sea salt. It has a great flavour that’s chocolatey without being cloyingly sweet, plus a hit of minty freshness that’s not dissimilar to the taste of an After Eight. It also scores top marks for texture, with its chocolate coating and crunchy double-layered interior. A perfect example is Barebells: I absolutely love their protein bars ( Fulfil bars are extremely similar) but the plant-based Barebells protein bars really fell short for me. Sports nutritionist Tom Clifford agrees: “Processed protein doesn’t necessarily mean low quality. Whey protein, which is derived from milk, is a very high quality source of protein even though it’s processed.” Plant-based protein sources commonly used in bars include soy, rice and pea protein. Do protein bars make you put on weight? Although sweeteners have been used, the result is still very natural. In fact, I actually do think they could be made a little sweeter still.Available in three flavours including chocolate brownie crunch, gooey salted caramel and peanut butter cup White Chocolate Salted Peanut was not my jam, but it gets points for uniqueness. It was an earlier flavor I tried, so I really enjoyed the white chocolate, but it wasn’t very true to it’s name for me flavor wise. The salt and peanut was overshadowed by the white chocolate, but everybody’s taste is different, so you might be able to taste them more. Tastewise, they’ve got it bang on. I tried the Chocolate Brownie Crunch flavour and I’m pleased to report there’s no bitter protein aftertaste lingering in your mouth and it actually resembles a regular chocolate bar. The inside is gooey, almost like cookie dough and the outer is topped in coated cereal. As a vegan, finding the perfect protein source is like finding a ray of sunshine at the end of a long and dark tunnel. Speculoos Cookie Butter are at the top of my list because how surprising they are. Chocolate and cinnamon? Gross. Except it was delicious! The uniqueness of flavor, surprise, and enjoyment I got out of this vegan Misfits protein bar puts it at the top for me. I have never seen another flavor or bar like it (I have seen some cinnamon inspired flavors, but I have not enjoyed them). The cinnamon is light, and it takes a few bites to get the full taste. Because it is a chocolate covered bar, keep in mind it might not taste 100% like a Speculoos cookie with chocolate, but it tastes like some happy medium. The pink caramel is fruity flavored in the vegan birthday cake protein bar.

Dark Chocolate Brownie is a straightforward chocolate protein bar. If you like the texture and sweetness of the other bars, but are looking for something more familiar, this is your bar right here. Up to here (the dark chocolate brownie) above, I would probably get a full case again. Below, I would get single bars or the variety box, but not full cases – with a couple exceptions.

Rewards For Life

Whichever bar you choose, it’s a myth that increasing your protein consumption (within your recommended energy intake) will cause you to gain weight. In fact, as nutritionist Jenna Hope explains, ensuring you eat enough protein can actually help you maintain a healthy weight: “Protein can be beneficial for balancing blood sugar levels and limiting energy crashes, as it helps you to feel fuller for longer,” she says. “Increasing your protein consumption within the realms of your required energy intake will not cause weight gain.” So, within reason, don’t stress too much about the calorie count. If you’re unfamiliar with Misfits, they started selling these plant-based protein bars in 2020, and they’ve exploded onto the scene with very high praise. Clifford recommends 0.7g of protein per kg of body weight for the average adult, in line with guidance from the British Nutrition Foundation. While you should be aiming to get enough protein from whole food sources in your diet, protein supplements can help boost your intake if you’re working towards specific fitness goals. I was in no way paid or compensated by the company to write anything in this post. I was motivated to write it because I was curious about other’s opinions and had yet to find a list that suited my needs/taste. General Flavor of Misfits Protein Bars
