Garry and Shona Wilson are the people behind Rumburra Scotland Ltd in Fife and their small-batch golden aged rum brand Rumburra. This family business has been in operation since 2019 and their signature rum, Rumburra Orach, is a premium, craft, golden aged rum. It is small batched and handcrafted in Scotland at 42.3% abv. Banditti Club Glasgow Spiced Rum launched in 2018 and has since received a Gold Medal at the 2020 London Spirits Competition and 2021 Spirits Business Rum & Cachaca Masters. The Banditti Club Port Cask finish, which launched in early 2022, has recently been awarded a Gold Medal at The World Rum Awards. Banditti Club Smoky Rogues is a testament to our ever-expanding range of innovative small batch releases and the creativity of our team, who continue to push the realms of flavour experimentation in spirit making. This new expression joins our Port Cask Finished expression of Banditti Club, which was our first foray into these experimental rum releases. The reception has been fantastic and we have more releases planned for the future.”

Banditti Club Glasgow Spiced Rum is named after a band of ardent spirits who would meet in Glasgow’s local public houses in the late 18th and early 19th century; singing, eating and playing music late into the night. With warming spice and subtle hints of smokiness, Smoky Rogues is the perfect tipple for discerning rum fans as we draw into the colder months. It has notes of dark chocolate, Christmas cake and spiced orange which combine with smoky tobacco notes, mulled spices and zesty marmalade. A long finish with subtle smokiness, hints of roasted pineapple and earthy spices.” This mix of flavours results in a classic “sweet and salty” taste (a version of salted caramel). The 45 is then aged in a bourbon/whisky cask, one that has been used for years in the US bourbon craft and subsequently more years in Scotch whisky distilling. This finish brings together the flavours of Scotland and the USA and in an unfiltered, real rum. Taste Light-bodied, triple sec spirity orange, cherry cola, sweet and salty like peanut butter and chocolate Reese’s peanut butter cups? coal-tar soap, phenolic and juniper – I shouldn’t like this but I do! Aberdeen-based Ardent Spirits, an independent bottling company, recently launched an exclusive ‘Sea Shanty rum’ with proceeds going to Aberdeen RNLI.

This is a single-cask limited-edition Banditti Club Glasgow Spiced Rum. It is aged and spiced like the rum above, but instead of cutting it down with water, this one has spent another 18 months in a cask previously used for Glasgow 1770 Peated Single Malt. The cask brings a layer of smokiness into the spirit. Smoky Rogues is bottled at a higher ABV of 52.2%. Only 390 delicious bottles were made available. Natural sweetness and warm spice on the nose, Banditti Club opens up to toasted pineapple and orange on the palate with notes of clove and anise that lead to a long spicy finish.

Glasgow 1770 The Original Cask Strength

Launched in 2016, SeaWolf was the first white rum to be distilled in Scotland. The white rum brand came from the team behind renowned Edinburgh bar Bramble, Mike Aikman and Jason Scott, and Vino Wines’ co-founder, Gavin Ferguson, who have teamed up to create drinks innovation company, Boilermaker Drinks Co. Naturally aged in oak casks and spiced with a selection of fresh fruit and exotic spices, Smoky Rogues is then finished in casks that previously held Glasgow 1770 Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky to add a deep and complex layer of smoky richness. Made at Ogilvy Spirits, the fermentation of the cane molasses (the spirit’s base ingredient) is done at low temperature for four weeks using both rum and champagne yeast, which gives this drink its unusual flavour profile.

Glasgow’s first Rum Distillery in over 300 years was opened by Wester Spirit Co. The Wester premium spiced rum is “made the old fashioned way in the west end of Glasgow” and was started in 2018 by Zander Macgregor and Allan Nairn. Made in small batches using traditional ingredients and small pot stills. The Original combines the finest Scottish barley and the exceptionally pure water of Loch Katrine to create the finest spirit and is handcrafted in copper pot stills Originally small batch distilled in England before moving production to Scotland, the rums draw inspiration from the couple’s Ugandan and Jamaican family heritage. The mighty craft beer producers BrewDog have also entered into the distilling arena via the BrewDog Distilling Co. and new products such as their Five Hundred Cuts Botanical Rum. Made with blood orange, ginger and finished in sherry casks, their Distiller’s Cut is a sweet and spicy rum inspired by the darker side of the Five Hundred Cuts story. Interestingly, it is distilled in the world’s first triple-bubble still after five days of fermentation and is then double pot distilled to create a white rum which is then infused with a range of spices and ingredients to create the botanical expression.
