The character driven chapter structure is a positive and it keeps the book well structured and at times fast paced. The book starts rather slowly but gains momentum towards the end, which always seemed rather too distant. This is a very good book but there are finer examples of the genre available. If you are looking for a tale that features more sword than sorcery and enjoy the nuances of epic battles then this will be just your cup of tea. If you have read Game of Thrones and want more of the same then this will not disappoint but unfortunately I was rather looking forward to finishing the book and not for all the right reasons. A good book but too long. In the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow and Lord Mormont prepare for the search for Benjen. Jon meets Craster, a man who marries his daughters and gives his sons to the cold gods. He learns that Mance Rayder, the new King of the wildlings, is amassing men to march on King’s Landing. Sansa Stark, eldest daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, held captive by the King on the Iron Throne at King's Landing A Clash of Kings depicts the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in civil war, while the Night's Watch mounts a reconnaissance to investigate the mysterious people known as wildlings. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen continues her plan to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. A Clash of Kings’employs George R. R. Martin’s use of limited third-person perspective to dive into the story of Westeros. The use of limited prescience in the novel makes the reader understand the perspective of each character from whom the story gets narrated.

Stannis was a great character to introduce in this book. He felt like a real contender to the Iron Throne, and even though I felt like he couldn’t win because Tyrion was a defender of the city, I was still surprised when he lost. Japanese: 王狼たちの戦旗 (The Wolf-King Clan's Battle) Hayakawa Publishing Corporation (2004) Hardcover, 2 volumes; (2007) softcover, 5 volumes. Tones of danger, death, despair, and sadness get used in ‘A Clash of Kings.’As the War of the Kings ravages Westeros, agitation gets used to make the reader understand and feel the intensity of destruction the war caused. After reading authors of the calibre of Robin Hobb and Steven Erikson I would have to say that George R. R. Martin is not quite in the same league as a storyteller and that the characters are not as well formed or as deserving of the readers emotions. In King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister arrives to act as Hand in Lord Tywin's stead. Whilst intriguing against his sister Cersei, Tyrion improves the city's defenses. Learning of Renly's death, Tyrion resolves on two courses of action. Knowing that the Tyrells will not be happy following Stannis, he decides to make them a better offer. He also resolves to bring the Martells of Dorne into the war on his side. He sends Littlefinger to treat with the Tyrells and sends other messengers to Dorne. He wins Littlefinger's support by promising to make him the Lord of Harrenhal. The negotiations are solidified by marriage arrangements. Lord Mace Tyrell agrees to wed his daughter Margaery to King Joffrey I, whilst Prince Doran Martell agrees to marry his son Trystane to Joffrey's sister Myrcella.

Lord Tywin starts marching out of Harrenhal to fight Robb. However, his army gets beaten by the young King. Arya aids in recapturing Harrenhal for Roose Bolton. The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones is a world book detailing the history of Westeros and the known world. The flaw in the book as an answer to Dawkins (I am not saying it is meant as that, just that it lends itself to such interpretation) is to me that it is somewhat artfully self indulgent (some of the sub plots are sheer Victorian whimsy) and the over reliance on magic and magii at key moments. JK Rowling shares the same weakness in my view though to a lesser extent in her magic stories of Hogwarts. But I think this work is a real response to atheism, and its flat reading of life, it shows however plausible the Dawkins position is up to a point (the Selfish Gene is a massive massive work!) it is missing something, called atmosphere, electricity, the pro and contra, atmosphere, catharsis, and hope! At Winterfell, Bran Stark is left in charge of the castle and begins suffering from strange dreams. He finds two new friends when Jojen and Meera Reed, children of Eddard Stark's close friend Lord Howland, arrive from Greywater Watch and take an interest in his dreams.

Meanwhile, a group of men from the Night’s Watch leave the Wall and travel into the mysterious woods to the north. They spend the night at Craster’s Keep, where Craster reveals that Mance Rayder is gathering all the wildings. They continue moving north, camping at the Fist of the First Men. Jeor Mormont sends Jon Snow and Qhorin Halfhand as reconnaissance scouts. The pair discover that the wildings are moving. Jon has a dream in which he becomes Ghost, his direwolf. Later, the events of the dream come true, implying that Jon, like his half-brother Bran, is a warg (skinchanger). Qhorin commands Jon to pretend to give up the Night's Watch and join the wildlings if they are captured, but to secretly keep gathering information. When the wildlings take Jon and Qhorin, they make the two fight to the death, and deliberately allows Jon to kill him to convince the wildlings that Jon truly means to abandon the Watch. Time is out of joint. The summer of peace and plenty, ten years long, is drawing to a close, and the harsh, chill winter approaches like an angry beast. Two great leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon, who held sway over an age of enforced peace—are dead, victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding wilds of Winterfell, chaos reigns, as pretenders to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms prepare to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

A Clash of Kings: Full Book Summary | SparkNotes

In ‘A Clash of Kings,’we see the young children of Winterfell mature into young adults. Robb, only a boy when his father left Winterfell, becomes King in the North. Arya meets a gruesome scene of dead people, and some guards try to take a boy called Gendry, but Yoren stops them. There are odd moments breathing life into low-key characters, such as for Catelyn during the nightmarish experience in Renly’s tent (though I found Brienne far more interesting) or the ex-smuggler, Ser Davos, smuggling Melisandre to......... [no spoiler here] or Jon’s penetration of what lies beyond the wall.
