So how do I as a non-manga reader describe Assassination Classroom? Absurdism. It makes no sense and you just have to go with it for pure nonsensical entertainment value. Koro Sensei, a pun meaning "the teacher that can't be killed," is wanted by the Japanese Ministry of Defense for destroying most of the moon and promising to destroy the Earth unless he's stopped. So naturally he's offered a teaching position to keep him from doing harm and causing panic, and a classroom of thirty armed teenagers try to kill him every day while he teaches them grammar and algebra. I shit you not, that's the truth. And it's truly, utterly bizarre. A friend gave me this for Christmas. (Thanks, Wes!) It's a quirky read that is actually kind of amazing and embodies all the weird contradictions and sudden mood shifts so characteristic of manga. Yes, Koro-sensei is a tentacle monster who intends to destroy the world... but he's kind of a great teacher. Yes, it's the story of a group of people who have to kill a monster to save their world... but it's also the story of how one teacher can change a student's life and restore their faith and self-respect! To be honest, part of me wonders exactly how much of this manga is social commentary on the education system in Japan. But then someone decides to poison some students and request they sent the Koro-sphere in Exchange for the antidote. ]Talk about some bad twist, almost as bad as a Shamalang twist.

Update--Three volumes of this series have been banned by Vero Beach High School because they are afraid it might encourage students to kill their teachers, something it has yet to successfully do after millions of readers have read it. The ultimate point of the book is that this teacher encourages his struggling low-level classroom to believe in themselves. Earth is left in jeopardy after an enormously powerful tentacled creature suddenly appears and destroys 70% of the Moon, leaving it in the shape of a crescent. The creature claims that within a year, he will destroy the planet next. However, he offers mankind a chance to avert this fate. Original review, 2/21/16: Crazy premise: A goofy-looking smiley-faced monster has already destroyed much of the moon, and now threatens to destroy Earth, in one year, but he also wants to become a teacher. For some reason. And he's a good teacher, too. Koro Sensei, they call him. The unkillable teacher.
