As you can imagine, this design pairs well with many straps in various materials and colors. Anything from a rubber tropic strap to the original Sean Connery 007 strap look right at home on this watch. Despite my reservations about the execution of the design, it’s worth highlighting that some of the physical aspects of this watch are very impressive indeed.

Given that it’s essentially got the same look as the Submariner, the 1953 is a fantastically versatile watch, debatably more so than the 8926OB. It’s got enough water resistance and a tough enough movement to be worn for years to come, yet is dressy enough for less casual events. Its standard lug widths also allow you to dress the 1953 up and down with NATO, rubber, and leather straps. The matte crown is a bit incongruous with the rest of the watch, but it’s hardly noticeable and easily disregarded. Besides that, the crown is sturdy and easy to use. Case DimensionsUnfortunately, I wasn’t quite so impressed by the watch itself. In fact, I think it’s a bit overhyped. Here’s why. Invicta isn’t a brand to shy away from marketing. If you haven’t had them rammed down your throat on television, you’ve probably had them stalk you around the internet instead. They’ve even done collaborations with everyone from Shaq to Star Wars and Spongebob. I’d go as far as to call them the loudest brand in the watch world. Corners must be cut at this price point, but it’s no stretch to presume folks would pay a little more for upgraded specs. At the very least, a sapphire crystal upgrade would have been nice. It's not supposed to be a BB is it, it's supposed to be a homage to the very first Rolex sub dating from 1953. The solid links of the bracelet are vertically brushed with polished sides. The finish of the bracelet is actually a little nicer than the brushing on the case, with a finer grain. This one employs a pin and collar adjustment system. Movement

It’s always fun to see them glisten as you turn the watch in the light. The second hand is also quite unique to the 1953, as it features a lollipop that extends out to the edge of the dial. One thing to appreciate about Invicta is their addition of a customized rotor. In their signature yellow, the rotor adds a degree of decoration to an otherwise plain movement. Admittedly, it’s a bit nicer than the bare steel rotors on some of Seiko’s own watches.

While the watch maintains a vintage aesthetic, it wears very much like a modern diver. On the wrist, it feels larger than its 40mm size would suggest. While this may be deceptive, the ridiculous markup prices are easy to see though. Any sensible shopper can determine the true value of an item by comparing prices online. There’s no getting around it, Invicta gets a lot of flak on the internet. It’s the one brand everyone loves to hate. While there are several reasons behind this, most of them are subjective and strongly opinionated (I’ll spare you a lengthy discussion of aesthetics). I presume there's a similar VAT deal to the CW seem to have for sales going the other way. Its helpful if dealers can manage the VAT without buyers having to get involved. It's good to see that Invicta can make a nice watch when they want to. I own one, and from a VFM perspective, they are a decent product. It's one of the only non-Rolex date magnifiers I've seen that's actually decent.

Normally I would run a mile from an Invicta watch, but in this case I'd advocate that's €120 well spent, Simon. Homage Watch Lists: Audemars Piguet Alternatives | Breitling Alternatives | Grand Seiko Alternatives | Nomos Alternatives | Omega Alternatives | Rolex AlternativesThe unguarded crown is faithful to the Rolex and functionally is excellent. Not only does it have plenty of grippy serrations but is perfectly responsive and a pleasure to use during time adjustments and winding. Bracelet In the hands, it feels decent for the money, which puts me in a rather strange predicament. This 1953 is a good quality watch that’s also well-priced when available at retail cost. Lume has been applied to the indices, bezel pip, and hour and minute hands. Alas, there’s none on the second hand lollipop. The application is even, though it’s not particularly bright or long lasting. Mine is the Coke model. It came with a plain, rather small box. I’m ok with that. Takes up less space. Yet, rather quietly, an auspicious dive watch has sneaked its way onto the scene; with very little marketing. This one first cropped up in early 2020, so why am I only just talking about it now? Well, naturally, or perhaps artificially, by the time I discovered the watch, it had already sold out.

While the clasp is stamped and the bracelet endlinks are hollow, the bracelet is not terribly rattly and feels comfortable on the wrist. Position 2 is referred to as a “ghost date” position and serves no purpose. Usually a cost-cutting measure, it is the result of using a date complication movement on a watch with no date window. Unfortunately, the finishing of the case leaves something to be desired. While the chamfered edges are a nice touch, the brushed grain is quite large and looks unrefined. This is accentuated in photos, but it’s definitely noticeable with the naked eye. In 1991, the company was revived under American ownership and has been producing watches since. They’re not shy about flaunting their Swiss heritage, even incorporating the Swiss cross into their logo. Though they do produce watches in Switzerland, many of their watches are also produced in Asia. You can view Sales Corner if your post count is 50 or more and you have been registered as a member for 60 days or more. Not only did the looks excite me but the omission of the engraving down the side, which brought down the previous Pro Divers in my books. I personally like the look of a coyote brown NATO, as the color is spot on with the gilt accents. Lume
