Very much designed to be played by a bunch of people who are laughing and shouting and possibly drinking, and who aren’t going to get hung up on counting or nitpicking or other minutiae; but it could also easily be played by a more sober, thoughtful crowd. Someone reads a prompt from a card, and everyone (including the reader) has to pick words from their collection of word magnets to express what is on the card. Ransom Notes is an always-fresh, laugh-out-loud game where you compete against your friends to answer wacky messages from a limited pool of word magnets. A few of the cards pretty explicit (“Walk us through the masturbation process,” for instance, and “Ask your boss for a promotion in exchange for sexual favors”).I suppose you could play with more people, and just find something else to stick the magnets to, but it might get cumbersome if you add too many players. Each round, the player judge picks a situation and players try to come up with the best answer from their pool of magnets. Overall, a clever, funny, successfully-conceived game, and we laughed a lot, and we played a full game in under an hour. I bought it randomly and now it’s one of my friends favorite game for me to bring to all our gatherings.

During our first print run, we got some feedback that the "sheets" the word magnets came in took a while to separate. Ransom Notes is a party game for 3 to 6 players, aged 17+ that contains myriad magnetic words used to complete challenges such as writing a convincing argument claiming dinosaurs aren’t real or offering to apply suncream on a rapidly burning stranger on the beach or even answering questions such as what’s the biggest lie you’ve ever told. There are a few suggested ways to judge who wins the round but mostly I play with a friendly bunch so we take an honest vote accepting if someone else’s response is genuinely better than our own we vote for it.Grab a handful aiming for around 75 but you don’t have to count, unless you know, you have to, in which case this is going to be a looooong game!

We didn’t come across any really R-rated words (I think we found “boob,”“genital,”“panties,” and “bitchy” and a few others at that level), but there were a lot of words like “secrete” and “bedroom” and “flesh” which are not inherently sexy, but it felt like the word selection overall was weighted in that direction.With 250 wacky prompt cards and a different set of word magnets each time, players end up creating an endless variety of terrifyingly impressive sentences. The game is rated 17+ for mature content, but can easily be made family-friendly by removing some of the prompt cards.

While a majority of prompt cards are certainly suitable for all audiences, there are quite a few that are definitely not. Designed for 3-6 players, Ransom Notes is perfect for game night groups who want a game that’s as silly as it is clever. They even thought of details like reminding you to stick your word magnets to the side of the tray without a lip, so it will be easier to scrape them off into the pot when the round is over. The major quibble I had was that they were trying a little too hard to steer you toward a naughty game experience (and yes, it does say it’s for ages 17+.Express service refers to Tracked 24 which usually means next working day, however this is not a guarantee.
