Still reeling from the loss of her parents, she takes it personally until one day when she is trapped in the house and she discovers the Young's terrible secret. For me it was an hour and twenty minutes well spent and I will be definitely recommending it to friends and family and of course to all you kind souls bothering to read my take on this truly underrated movie. She becomes unhinged when she learns that her new neighbour (Natasha Calis) has secretly befriended the boy, and has been encouraging behaviour she doesn’t approve of. Nevertheless, I definitely did not expect the twist towards the end of the film and had not guessed the true picture at all.

The tension takes place mostly in Andy's house where Maryann and Andy must steal precious moments together to play ball and be normal teenagers while avoiding the critical eye of Katherine who most definitely doesn't want Andy to have any visitors. There was some fine acting from the youngsters Charlie Tahan and especially Natasha Calis as the friend who puts everything on the line to rescue him. and there folks lies this truly ENGROSSING thriller, that left me feeling as though I had been treated to an Oscar worthy production, gripping from beginning to end. a little better however the young actors (Natasha Calis and Charlie Tahan) outshining all the adults, give excellent emotional wide eyed performances as two kids caught in the complexities of an adult phsycho-mess that is the relationship between Katherine (Morton) and Richard (Michael Shannon) and their response to having a sick child. Katherine is well respected medial professional that is until she goes home where both her and her husband have been home schooling their only son Andy who has a number of medical conditions. There was just one guy, a wonderful man named Gerry Kessler who died since the movie was completed, who wrote one check out of his own pocket, for 6,5 million dollars.

Well, something is seriously amiss in the boy's home and it soon becomes clear that his mother is doing something to him. He truly plays the role of a grieving father quite masterfully, so much to where you begin to feel his sadness and pain, it's simply brilliant. In her role as Katherine Young, Samantha Morton provides a disturbing insight into the lengths a mother will go to protect her child. It may seem like a bit of a chore at times, but there is a lot to enjoy in this quietly terrifying, character-driven horror thriller and it’s worth watching for Samantha Morton’s performance alone. This is a commendable film from McNaughton with an almost touching and clever treatment of clashing perspectives, those of the innocent children and those of grieving adults. As an Oscar nominee, Morton is capable of far more than this script provided and rather than letting the tension play out naturally, certain scenes were definitely over-acted.

Also another child actor who should really be congratulated, Nolan Lyons, who, although he doesn't have any lines, performs a very difficult part incredibly convincingly especially for one so young (I won't elaborate or it really would be a spoiler). The script seems a little thin in places and the characters of Maryann’s Grandparents could have been fleshed out (and acted! I mean, c'mon, there's a section when they want you to be excited from watching a teenage version of Misery. With just a simple nod or sideways glance she is able to elicit a ridiculous amount of fear and unease. There is a surprising finale, which is all the more hard-hitting because you’ve been on a long journey with these characters. It manages to find its stride at the half-way point, but up until then it does drag ever so slightly. I give Can't Come Out to Play an okay three out of five stars and recommend it for Monday night viewing. Also, there are twists and turns elegantly weaved in to the story to keep you on your toes, preventing Can’t Come Out To Play from being as predictable as you may think. We never know how Kathleen’s going to act and her personality shifts more suddenly than the British weather. The film is directed by John McNaughton and features acclaimed actor Peter Fonda ( Easy Rider) as Maryann's grandfather.
