The previous 3 albums all built on each other as Joel’s songwriting became more consistent. While I love Streetlife Serenade, I think this is his first great album. Strong effort start to finish and sets the stage for, arguably his greatest album, The Stranger and the run of multi-platinum albums to come. Nobody Knows But Me" B-side of " Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" by Bruce Springsteen (US promo single) CBS PRO151, from In Harmony 2 LP (1981) Turnstiles is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released on May 19, 1976.If you love Billy Joel, this record needs love too. Not a lot of hits, but "New York State of Mind" is good enough. And that youthful voice of his will change by the next record. Joel says he didn’t make The Stranger like it was his last shot at success, but it’s hard to see it any other way. Famously, Joel likes to say that he didn’t want to put the biggest song on the album. “That’s one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard,” Linda Ronstadt apparently told Joel after hearing “Just the Way You Are” in the studio. A lot of people have since agreed with her, including those at the Recording Academy, which gave Joel the Grammys for Record and Song of the Year. Barbra Streisand covered " New York State of Mind" on her album Superman, released in the Spring of 1977, opening up Billy Joel's music to a mainstream audience. He thanked her for the exposure, and also told her his New York relatives were duly impressed to have the Queen of Brooklyn cover one of his songs. Despite not being released as a single, "New York State Of Mind" became extremely popular and, along with "Piano Man", emerged as one of Joel's signature songs. "Prelude/Angry Young Man" and "Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)" became live favorites, with the latter being included on Joel's 1981 live album Songs In The Attic along with "Summer, Highland Falls", "I've Loved These Days" and "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", which became a hit when the live version was released as a single.
