It’s a beautiful book full of brilliantly written poems that speak volumes to both your heart and soul.

The greatest scam is us believing that you’re better than us, when you stole all that we were and sold it back, convincing us of our inferiority, spitting on our graves. Being In Your Body (Abrams, 2019) is a journal for women, femmes and non-binary folks to work through body dysmorphia. It's about the abuse enacted by mothers, while considering the history of that abuse; it's about the psychological torture of being talked about but never heard, of not knowing the sound of our own voices because of how long it's been drowned out by others, it's about a deep empathy and respect for abusive parents who have survived so much that you'll never have to go through. mothers’ is particularly powerful ( when i look in the mirror, sometimes i see them, looking back, eyes droopy, weary from the weight of womanhood, tired of the throes of masculinity, patriarchy, white supremacy, they mourn it too. How to Cure a Ghost explores a young woman’s journey from self-loathing to self-acceptance, and deserves to be as widely read as possible. If Fariha Roisin does not want to be judged for how she looks than she needs to work on not judging others by the same stereotypes.

I’m acutely familiar with that, more times than I’d care to admit, so I couldn’t help but really relate to and enjoy some bits. I would highly recommend this collection to any fans of poetry , or just if you want a collection as a starting point i would recommend this one too. My favorites were “Golden Lube,” “Mansplain Nation,” “Rumi,” “This One’s with Teeth,” “What 9/11 Did to Us,” and “Belonging. The underdeveloped metaphors along with the insistence of talking about the same themes that have already been discussed in plenty of other poetry collections before made me give this book only 1 star - it brings to the literary scene absolutely nothing new.

Roisin's] writing is intensely vulnerable and through revealing her own experience she reflects so many others.are very important and should still be addressed… i just don’t think this is how i’d like to read about them personally. There is no doubt however that the poems in How to Cure a Ghost are very personal to the author and came from the heart. Some of these poems are quite lovely, and I appreciate the poem about The Keepers, as my own family has suffered sexual abuse from the Catholic Church, but rather than rising above such stereotypes she embraces them, covering her contempt for another culture by claiming discrimination against her own. I’m a feminist, but I’m a white feminist, and I’m very aware of the privilege which comes with that.
