Description

You’re a parent with no clue about Warhammer. Now you have an Elite Starter Set and a really excited kid. You don’t need to concern yourself with getting that pile of grey sprues all built and ready before you can get started; nor do you have to fret about the waning attention span of your exciteable child. Death Korps of Krieg Veteran Guardsmen (there are only ten in the photo above, as I didn’t build the variant of the Veteran Guardsman medic who has a bag on its own base this time around)

The person buying this maybe wants a wee bit more than the Recruit Edition is offering, but doesn’t want to sink the kind of money required for the Command Edition. There are a couple of reasons for this. First off, the mission walkthroughs are extremely hand-holdy, so much so that the missions instruct players what to do with each figure in each turn. There’s not much room for on-the-spot learning or interpretation. Whilst this is great for hammering home key info about certain mechanics, things are a little bit rigid, and the “playing” one does doesn’t really seem like playing. You expect the training wheels to be bolted on pretty tight, but you were expecting dad to let go of the handlebars.

Fresh from one of the larger sprues in the box come three bike-mounted badasses. You get no options with these guys: its two guys in helmets waving chainswords about, and a dude brandishing a bolter with his head uncovered. But these guys look so nice that I don’t care. With all these awesome ways to get started with Warhammer 40,000 – the Dark Millennium has never looked more inviting. So, make your choice, sound the warhorns and jump right in. Your new hobby awaits! Anyway, in spite of the weird box terrain, the set does a great job of introducing newbies to playing Warhammer 40,000. No faction abilities, psychic powers or other synergies here. Just the rudiments of the game. Warhammer 40,000 Elite Edition Starter Set Review – Final Thoughts Pros There are 6 sprues in total in this box: 1 for the Combat Gauges and Kill Team Barricades, 4 for the Kill Teams themselves, and 1 for the Ork scenery. If getting the models on the table is your sole focus, you could go from ripping the plastic off the box to throwing dice in 30 to 45 minutes. Price and AvailabilityThe book is bursting with examples, fabulous pictures, and, of course, more beautifully-painted models than you can stuff into a cardboard box and print “ Indomitus” on the front of. It’s a lovely piece of literature, and not too intimidating for the beginner. I can tell you from years of making models, and only recently becoming a commission painter, these are some of the easiest models I’ve ever assembled. I can see it already: Necron circuits frying as their frontline gaze in awe at the Space Marine Outriders as they desperately try to compute how they could ever possibly hope to look as formidable. This isn’t a major issue but in set that’s supposed to include everything you need to start playing a game with a lot of moving parts it can be problematic.

The other issue with the Recruit Edition guidebook is that, at times, it’s not very well-written, nor very well-formatted. There is a menacing synchronicity in the unit: ten skeleton-like space robots fearlessly marching ahead, driven by pure mechanical desire. Their contrast to the Space Marines is stark, but they have their own unique dark energy. The ghoulish and spindly – and also concerningly fragile-looking – Necron Warriors await, along with their Canoptek Scarabs. Necron Warriors

There are two books in the Kill Team Starter Set. One is the all-important (and oddly named) “Recruit Edition” book, which is essentially a beginners guide designed to teach brand-new players of Kill Team all the stuff they need to get playing.
