This garment does not uphold the fashionable styles or beauty practices from the time, as it was a garment to be worn by a person who was a member of the Punk subculture. The Punks updated this look through slashing, studs, rips, safety pins, and other methods of distressing (Fig. would issue a garment that declares, in the ominous, heart-breaking words of the Pistols’s song: “We’re the flowers in the dustbin. The lyrics to the song “God Save the Queen” by the Sex Pistols, surround this image along with the band’s logo.

This is a testament to the idea that women designers can be their own muses; designing clothing that they themselves would wear. Guitarist Steve Jones stated that when Matlock first played him the song it did not sound like 'God Save the Queen': "It was like ' Love Me Do' or something". A cover version by the English heavy metal band Motörhead was released as a single in 2000 to promote their album, We Are Motörhead.

Sometimes there was a safety pin through her patrician nose; sometimes swastikas obliterated her born-to-serve eyes. The children’s book sidesteps her most controversial creation, which features prominently in the new Disney series dramatising punk’s protagonists, Pistol. The single was released on 27 May 1977, and was regarded by many of the general public as an assault on Queen Elizabeth and the monarchy.

The styles sold at Seditionaries were essential in spreading the Punk style (Westwood and Kelly 183). The Department for Education and Royal Collection Trust were involved “at every stage” of the creation of the illustrated book, which takes children on a journey through the Queen’s life, “celebrating the achievements, people and places that have become part of her remarkable legacy” and which includes the words to the (official) God Save The Queen.
