Description

You have provided, truthfully, one of the BEST arguments against running Windows at all: “…you have 64G for windows and each time you have a big windows update, you may have to clean your disk…It is possible i guess to fit win10 on 64G but with time i think it is too small to maintain the system…” The GPD XD Plus is powered by a Mediatek MT8176 processor running at 2.1Ghz, the graphics chip is a PowerVR GX6250 running at 600Mhz. There is 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. The storage can be expanded with a MicroSD Card. The XD Plus has supports 2/5Ghz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. Now The Phawx reports the Win Mini display will also have a 120 Hz refresh rate and will come with a choice of two processor options: Top-tier models will have an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor with Radeon 780M graphics based on RDNA 3 architecture, while entry-level configurations will have a Ryzen 5 7440U chip (I’m not sure what GPU this version will have).

When playing games that require both keyboard and mouse input, there’s no comfortable way to use the touch sensor and the W, A, S, and D keys. So you may want to connect an external mouse if you plan to do any gaming… or just buy a mini PC designed for the purpose. Finally, keep an eye on the GPD. The company is clearly moving into new territory by taking risks, but they also have the courage to make quality hardware. I can’t wait to see what they do next. There were a few problems though. The first is that when you first launch the operating system the display will be sideways. While the G1 also has a USB4/Thunderbolt port that will let you connect it to a wide variety of devicesI tried the “xrandr -o right” command and I got an error message (I’ve since been told its because Fedora uses the Wayland display server rather than xserver). But it’s also very much a niche device. Some people are never going to be happy typing on a computer with keys this small. The display is too small to comfortably fit a lot of information at once. And GPD’s choice of placement for the optical touch sensor is less than ideal.

Follow the Windows installer... Make sure you select Windows 11 Home or you'll not be able to activate it unless you had Windows 10 Pro installed. Change the File System to NTFS, and the Volume Label to WINPE as shown below or the firmware flash will not work. Note that you may need to hit Fn+F12 a few times for this to work. If you accidentally boot into Windows 10 instead, just power down the computer and try again.

Essential info

In 2006, the concept of Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPC) became a reality with small, inexpensive laptops aimed at the masses. UMPC was a collaboration between Intel and Microsoft to create a new market for peripherals. With touch screens and support for a stylus, UMPC was a precursor to modern smartphones, but without cellular connectivity. So I turned off the computer for a few minutes to let it cool down, started it up again and ran the test again. This time the single-core test score jumped up to 3159, but the multi-core score was 5755, a little lower than it had been with the fan disabled. Having it here creates a few problems, first of all it is far from the keys which means that it really interrupts your flow if you need to use it. After having the device for a while I found that I was naturally using the arrow keys and other keyboard shortcuts as much as I could to navigate around as I found it to be much faster than taking my hands off the keyboard to use the optical sensor.

Given how horrible most laptop cameras are… and how ubiquitous smartphone cameras are, I suspect this is a feature most people won’t miss. But it’s still probably something you should be aware of. Again, I hit the Windows key, typed “terminal” and enter to open a terminal window, and then used the “xrandr -o right” command to rotate the display. This screen will be perfect for E-books and videos, and also to access internet. The bright display and high pixel density will make it easier to use outdoors. This device can easily provide better experience than a smartphone, also despite its small screen, the quality of screen is better than most laptops in the mid-range. SoundIf you have been following GPD you will know that they were originally not going to include an optical sensor at all and instead rely solely on the touch screen to select things. I am super glad that they did not go down this route, navigating a full Windows 10 OS (or Linux distro) on a 7 inch screen using only touch is something that I would not wish upon my worst enemy and the inclusion of the optical sensor above the keyboard, while slightly inconvenient make the machine usable.

This time I was able to boot into Debian, connect to the internet, surf the web, stream videos, and do just about everything you’d expect to be able to do with a modern desktop operating system. But if you are looking for extra graphics performance from a mini-laptop, the GPD P4 Max and GPD Win Mini will have a secret weapon: a PCIe OcuLink-2 port with support for data transfer speeds up to 16GB/s.

Keyboard

GPD set the default scaling to 175 percent on my demo unit, and that seems to be a pretty good compromise… but some applications still handle scaling in Windows 10 better than others, so don’t be surprised if every now and again you encounter software where all the menus and icons look incredibly tiny. While GPD may not be a familiar name, the company has already built a few handheld devices, including the GPD Win, a small handheld gaming computer we reviewed in March. Category When I ran Geekbench in fanless mode, I got a single-core score of 3035 and a multi-core score of 5777. I turned on the fan and ran the test again, and the scores were lower, probably because the system was warmer than it had been when I started. But I was able to run Ubuntu 18.04, Debian 9, and Fedora 28. Some worked better than others using the default settings. I did not install any of these operating systems to the built-in storage and didn’t do very much to alter system settings, so I don’t have much to say about performance, battery life, or long-term usage, but I wanted to at least see what the out-of-the-box experience was for each operating system.
