Description

Hetty has many adventures in this novel, from working as a maid for an author, to performing in a 'freak show' and visiting a seance, and meets some brilliant charaters along the way. I particularly loved Bertie, who Hetty spends many an interesting Sunday afternoon with, and thought he was a really lovely character and the interaction between the two were very funny and endearing. Hetty Feather (Sapphire Battersea) - a former foundling trying to find her way in the outside world. Even though this book wouldn't be really categorised as a Romance. I found both Bertie and Jem's relationships with Hetty so cute! I do hope none of them are just playing her and making it seem like they both like her. I can't wait to see what is going to happen in the next book!

Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award. This is about the book character. For the TV show character, see Hetty Feather (TV show character). Like the first novel there where many twists and turns, and I found myself surprised on various occasions (which rarely ever happens may I add). However, I did feel the first instalment had slightly more substance than the second. There also times when I wanted to clamp Hetty's mouth closed, but it was understandable, it was her fiery personality after all. When things go wrong she is on her own again, her life is a confusion and she must deal with conflicted love, loss and self discovery. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children’s Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children’s Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame.

Sapphire Battersea is the second book in the Hetty Feather book series. It was preceded by Hetty Feather and followed by Emerald Star. It was published in 2011 by Doubleday. In the kitchen, Hetty meets Mr. Buchanan's new servant girl, Rose-May, who reveals that Bertie is now taken with her. Upon hearing this, Hetty runs to the outhouse and vomits. While lamenting the fact that she's truly an orphan now, she hears Ida's voice informing her that she isn't an orphan - her father is still alive. The book ends with Hetty declaring "I am Sapphire Battersea", with the intent to seek out her father. After spending most of her childhood cooped up in the Foundling Hospital, Hetty is often confused, scared and in awe by the outside world. As she settles into her job, Hetty becomes a secretary of sorts to Mr. Buchanan, copying his stories as Mr. Buchanan's handwriting is hard to read. In return, Mr. Buchanan agrees to help refine Hetty's memoir, and to supply Hetty with stamps so she can continue to write to her mother. She also finds a potential love interest in Bertie, the local butcher's boy, who takes her out to the fair, on a boat ride, and for a walk in the park. Hetty also accompanies the parlourmaid, Sarah, to a seance with Madame Berenice, a medium. During the seance, an apparition of Hetty's long-dead foster brother, Saul, appears before Hetty, frightening her.

Mrs Gibson

Redhead in Green: Hetty makes her first formal dress out of green velvet, which can be seen on the cover of Sapphire Battersea. Sheila Mayhew - Hetty's enemy at the Foundling Hospital. She follows Hetty to Ida's room one night and as a result their secret is revealed and Ida is fired. Hetty Feather is the protagonist of the Hetty Feather book trilogy. She also appears in the spinoffs Diamond, Little Stars and Hetty Feather's Christmas, as well as Clover Moon and Dancing the Charleston. When I realised that this novel was the second part of a trilogy I was a little concerned that, having not read any Wilson before and therefore not having read the first novel, I would be a little lost. However, that was not the case at all. Wilson appears to have developed the characters in this novel completely independently of the first book so you can easily read it as a stand alone.
