Description

Reacher is picked up by the FBI and questioned but explains he's been a loner since he mustered out of the army. Similarly the illustrative quotes chosen here are merely those the complete review subjectively believes represent the tenor and judgment of the review as a whole. There is some clumsiness and silliness here, but Running Blind is a very good lightweight thriller, an easily enjoyable read. The FBI is unhappy that Reacher has killed one of their agents, murderer or not, but an accord is eventually reached with the whole affair to be kept secret.

The Visitor by Lee Child | Waterstones

There's a serial killer on the loose, and it looks like the killer is targeting female sexual harassment complainants who subsequently quit the military. We acknowledge (and remind and warn you) that they may, in fact, be entirely unrepresentative of the actual reviews by any other measure. If the denouement disappoints, Child rewards curiosity along the way with tight, well-worked plotting, pace and high mileage. What he did to Petrosian's goons isn't the reason they were tailing him, but it does give them some leverage over him, and they use that, for all it's worth (which turns out to be quite a lot). Please note that these ratings solely represent the complete review 's biased interpretation and subjective opinion of the actual reviews and do not claim to accurately reflect or represent the views of the reviewers. It is revealed they have both been killed in the last few months and a criminal profiling team has come to the conclusion that the person responsible was someone exactly like Reacher.

The Visitor (Child novel) - Wikipedia

Reacher and Harper come to the conclusion that Lamarr was utilising her hypnotising techniques to make the victims unwittingly suffocate themselves by swallowing their own tongues. The prologue opens with a mystery person's point of view on knowledge, power and killing, "People say that knowledge is power.

The dialogue-heavy novel is a bit basic in parts, and the crimes at its heart too silly, but Child has this plotted out well and sustains suspense throughout, with the final twists, once the perpetrator has been put out of action, particularly satisfying. The murder investigators are sure Reacher has the answers to their question: how did these women die?

The team holds several meetings at Quantico, and Reacher meets agent Lisa Harper, the woman who has to accompany Reacher wherever he goes. His books consistently achieve the number-one slot on bestseller lists around the world and have sold over one hundred million copies. The reason for the story having two different titles is due to how The Visitor—Child's original title and ultimately the UK title of the story—was seen by Putnam as sounding too much like a science-fiction novel.Once there Jack targets a random pair of criminals collecting protection money and deliberately instigates a turf war between rival racketeers. In New York City, Reacher confronts and beats up two thugs sent to collect protection racket money from the new restaurant in which he has just finished dinner, and deliberately implies to the thugs that he is a member of a rival crime organisation. What they are interested in is another case: two women have been killed, and both had had contact with Reacher in their and his previous life, in the army. Reacher and Harper come to the conclusion that Lamarr was using her expertise in hypnosis techniques to control the victims into suffocating themselves by swallowing their own tongues. And, yes, Running Blind is a novel where Reacher tries to figure put what kind of life he wants to lead.

Reacher and Harper drive and fly around a lot -- Running Blind is a typical Reacher-novel in that there is a ridiculous amount of travel involved -- which also gives Reacher time to mull over what he wants out of life -- or rather how he wants to lead it. Among the pleasing things about the plotting of Running Blind is how Child keeps bringing in and using the consequences of this one small encounter throughout the novel. The Visitor was released in the United Kingdom on 20 April 2000, [3] and the American publication followed on 13 July of the same year. Reacher realizes that he has no alibi for the places and times that the women were killed, and he requests a lawyer. There's meticulous planning involved, in these crimes being committed in the far reaches of the country. If not completely obvious, most readers will probably have suspected who the killer is, but Child takes his time in fully revealing how the crimes are committed.
