Philadelphus 'Virginal' – beautiful, double flowers with a beautiful scent. Height x Spread: 3m x 2.5m Consider using this variety as a feature on a patio or balcony, by planting in a pot and swaying the delightful scent throughout your seating area. These shrubs can grow in most soils from heavy clay to light, sandy soils or chalk. They are happy in acid or alkaline soil and they can also tolerate salt. They have a very deep root system and so are unaffected by dry weather. They will, however, need to be kept watered for their first year until the roots are well established. Fertiliser Requirements The spring foliage of the Philadelphus Coronarius Aureus emerges a bright yellow and then fades to a chartreuse green when mature. During the early summer months, it offers up a display of abundant white flowers that many says have a slight lemon fragrance. It grows to a height to 1 ½ metres but can be pruned to a smaller size. The Philadelphus Coronarius Aureus grows well in partial shade which makes the hardy shrub an excellent choice for a woodland garden. It grows well in areas up to a zone H-6 hardiness. Its toughness makes it well suited to coastal regions. Philadelphus Belle EtoileThe petite Philadelphus Manteau d’Hermine is a dwarf and only grows to a height of 60 to 80 centimeters with a spreading habit of 1 to 1.5 metres. However, don’t let the shrub’s diminutive size fool you because it produces an abundance of double blossoms. Its compact form rarely requires pruning to stay neat and tidy. The virtually carefree shrub grows throughout Britain and Ireland. It even thrives in coastal regions. It was awarded the esteemed Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. Philadelphus Virginal This variety has an arching habit, especially in mid-summer when it is laden with pure white, highly-scented flowers. It’s spread can be greater than its height, reaching 2 metres (7 feet). Philadelphus ‘Beauclerk’ Gardeners often use the word variety when referring to a specific plant, but the correct botanical term is 'cultivar'. Whichever word you use, it means a distinctive plant or plants, given a specific cultivar name and usually bred to enhance certain characteristics, such as flower or fruit size, colour, flavour or fragrance, plant size, hardiness, disease resistance, etc. Additionally, it is worth knowing that, botanically, variety has another meaning - it refers to a naturally-occurring distinct plant that only has slight differences in its looks. For example, Malva alcea var. fastigiata differs from typical plants by having an upright habit. cultivar with an eventual size that will suit your garden. So, like the other Philadelphus varieties, ‘Little White Love’ has a sun light requirement of 6 hours of sun per day. However, this shrub is more tolerant of partial sun and shade than other varieties. It will still flower best in full sun. Ideal Temperature

All varieties of this evergreen shrub blossom profusely, most with double white flowers and yellow stamens. In mid to late summer the entire shrub will be covered with blooms. These blossoms are very attractive to bees and butterflies and so are a good choice if you wish to entice wildlife to your garden. Most varieties will flower from June to July, though some are a little later.Of course, they make a great addition to a white garden, but they also look good with blue flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus. In fact, their white blossoms go well with most colour combinations from cool blues and violets to hot reds and yellows. Pruning Advice This variety is coveted for its exceptional fragrance. It is also prized for its white, single flowers with yellow stamens that grow in clusters of three or five. It is a more compact variety reaching 1.5 metres (5 feet) and it doesn’t mind being pruned, so can be useful for a smaller space. It will also do well in a large container. Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’Hermine’

While aphids are unlikely to kill your plant, they can make photosynthesis more difficult because of the damage to leaves, this can gradually weaken the plant. Encouraging the natural predators of aphids such as ladybirds, hoverfly larvae, lacewing larvae and parasitic wasps can help to keep them at bay, however often an infestation can build up before these insects are around in high numbers. Fill your garden with a delightful fragrance from this deciduous shrub which boasts large, double white flowers. As far as flower differences go, some are double or have coloured centres, but generally, the overwhelming impression is of a profusion of white blooms. Choose one that appeals most.

About Propagating

The temperature condition is perfect for Philadelphus little white love. They like it cool and shady, so a temperature around 60 degrees is ideal. They also like moist conditions, so make sure the soil is well-watered. Philadelphus ‘Avalanche’ This beautiful variety produces large single flowers that are white with orange-tinged petals and a hint of lilac around the stamens. It is a hardy shrub with an upright habit and graceful arching branches. As with most varieties, it will tolerate almost all conditions and grows to a height of approximately 1.5 metres (5 feet). About soil condition, Philadelphus 'Little White Love' prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It also does well in sandy soil as long as it is not too dry. The plant is drought tolerant once established. About light If planting in a container, choose a medium to large pot depending on the variety chosen. Make sure you choose one of the more compact or dwarf varieties for best results. Container grown plants will need to be kept well-watered, especially in dry conditions. They will also benefit from an application of fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone, three times a year. Maintenance Philadelphus are extremely easy to grow and are tolerant of most conditions.
