She has such a distinct way with words that once she's in your head she will continue to narrate not only the rest of the book for you but, probably, the rest of your life. The ghosts thank Coraline for their freedom in one of her dreams, although they assure her that the Beldam is seeking the key.

This dives into the mind of a woman struggling with PPD and I know sometimes those are topics not everything is eager to pick up, but I think Goodman does a fantastic job bringing the readers into Daphne's mind and experiencing her struggles. She tried four or five times before she was forced to accept that she just wasn’t big enough, and she put them down on the counter next to the door. This light and humorous book take us through Jen and partner Chloe deciding to get pregnant and their lives until their offspring turn four. He is left unnamed, as he explains that cats do not need names to tell each other apart, but the Other Mother refers to him as "Vermin". They aren't strong enough to act upon, but intrusive enough to where she questions herself and if she's capable of harming her infant daughter. Her husband Peter suggest for Daphne to attend a support group for postpartum anxiety, that's where she meets Laurel.

I feel like the ending wasn't as climactic as I was hoping it would be, but otherwise I really enjoyed it! Completely disagree with other reviewers who thought it needed more content on the experience of being a non biological mother. Although Coraline is seized by an urge to run away from the Other Mother several times, she overcomes this feeling and sticks to her guns to rescue her parents. One of them ends up at a mental hospital where she initially began work as an archivist and is later a patient claiming to be the one who is allegedly dead.

I loved her style, loved her jokes (especially those about family) so I thought I would read the book. The couple also provides Coraline with a protective stone which ultimately proves to be one of Coraline’s most valuable assets in the other universe. Their friendship was odd, though, because Laurel would tell stories about things that happened to Daphne and make them her own. In terms of comps, THE MEDEA COMPLEX (Rachel Florence Roberts) came to mind as did WHAT SHE LEFT BEHIND (Ellen Marie Wiseman) and a bit of THE YELLOW WALLPAPER. Hysterical, important, moving, wonderful' Sara Pascoe I'm Jen Brister, stand-up comedian, middle-aged adolescent and, more recently, a mum. This book is the definition of a psychological thriller, given that part of it takes place in a mental institution.

I found it very confusing to follow this plot and its alternating points of view from Laurel/Daphne. They were trapped by the Beldam at different times before Coraline, and reside in the dark space behind the mirror. When Coraline meets him under the trapdoor, she feels sorry for him and asks him to stand up to the beldam.During the prologue, the doll floats to a window to the other world after having served its purpose with the last victim. From the perspective of someone who doesn't have children, I can't comment on the love between a parent (biological or not) and their offspring, but what I can say is that Brister talks about relationships and forming bonds with people, in general, in a very candid and accessible way that leaves you feeling less alone, whether you are dealing with nappies and NCT groups in your day to day life or not. His father's sudden death; his mother's new husband, Glen, who he loathes; his two younger siblings, who he looks after more and more now that his mother works extra shifts. She wishes to trap Coraline in the parallel universe (the Other Mother’s world) and capture her soul (as she has captured other children’s souls).
