This box set brings together some of his most celebrated works, from his classic horror stories such as 'The Fall of the House of Usher' to his dream-like poetry such as 'The Raven' and his humorous, cynical satire including 'The Man who was Used Up'. I read Poe’s stories every year around this time and I really enjoyed the horror and emotion captured in this audio collection. No reader’s library is complete without the classics, where they’ll find all the romance, mystery, thrills, and storytelling magic they could ask for. Biographers and critics often suggest that Poe's frequent theme of the "death of a beautiful woman" stems from the repeated loss of women throughout his life, including his wife.

This shows the entire range of his writing abilities and while many may not enjoy his less macabre work, I enjoyed seeing another side to his writing and having insight into his life in the real world. Capitalizing on public interest in the topic, he wrote " The Gold-Bug" incorporating ciphers as an essential part of the story. In March 1825, Allan's uncle and business benefactor William Galt died, who was said to be one of the wealthiest men in Richmond, [14] leaving Allan several acres of real estate. It would've been helpful to have the French and Latin phrases and sometimes whole paragraphs in many of the stories translated to English.

The stories and poems that I like, I like very, very much; but there are others that are just yawnfests. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business. He published numerous articles, stories, and reviews, enhancing his reputation as a trenchant critic which he had established at the Messenger.

The creative mind this man had is absolutely incredible and I enjoy reading his works over and over. The Black Cat” is a tale of a man’s descent into some sort of psychotic madness that changes him so that he becomes cruel and murderous, but who thinks he will get away with it until “betrayed” by a black cat and possibly his own madness.

A hidden gem of a story that I had never before read The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion quickly became my favorite work of Poe.In 1841, he wrote "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," generally considered the first modern detective story. Meaning in literature, he said in his criticism, should be an undercurrent just beneath the surface; works whose meanings are too obvious cease to be art.
