Margaret Thatcher, the then prime minister, decided that life cannot continue to be what it was for the British. I think part of it was that Theroux comes across as really grouchy, which made my reading less escapist and enjoyable.

The repetition of these points doesn't build to any greater theme or purpose: it's as if Theroux just didn't re-read his manuscript and hadn't realized that he'd used the exact same phrasing against the exact same target five times before. However, he's amongst the best for idiosyncratic, personal, impressionistic relation, and the miserable old git persona very well suited indeed to the time and place he describes in The Kingdom by the Sea. The sun still shone, though it was setting, and the shadows of the cliff were creeping out towards him. But as he and his dog companion journey along the northern English coast, there is never enough distance between them and the terrible war. all over the world and written about it in an excellent series of travel books, he had never actually explored or written about the British Isles outside London.

Like the three girl bathers who were walking up the beach towards him, chattering and laughing and feebly hitting each other with wet towels. While he was traveling during the 80s, I can definitely say that some of the places he described either aren't that way now, or weren't given a fair shake.

I've read two other books covering much of the same route and Theroux blew them away and had me looking up towns and tracing his route. He naively finds the racial epithet "wog" cute and repeatedly refers to the prevalence of swastikas in graffiti and punk apparel as harmless.

Bus takes 3 times as long as rail, much less reliable, does not serve as many places as rail; he sees this transition to road over rail as leading to depopulating the rural areas, making them much more isolated and "Third World" like. He experiences yobs on trains, fights between mods and skinheads, grotty seaside guesthouses and a rail strike. There are some wonderful moments that struck notes with me -- for instance an encounter with Jonathan Rabin, who told me once during a signing event that he and Theroux were friends and often shared galleys before final publication. He is also a lover of rail travel and did not like the fact that the British rail service was shrinking even while he was making this trip.

Maggi has but one hope when her father is offered a job on the renovation of a stately home in the English countryside of Cheshire. There are places I've been to here - a nostalgia trip when thinking of many childhood holidays in Cornwall, but many I haven't, and taking this trip with Mr. Theroux is a wonderful observer, open to experience, a lover of people and customs, but doesn't hold back when he dislikes a landscape that has been ravaged or the ugliness of a town (e. Westfall built it up so high with this shiny possible new life and then pulled it right out from under you. He dreamed it was just a usual day at home, with Dulcie nagging on, and Mam baking, and Dad coming in from work and taking his boots off with a satisfied sigh. The setting is Tyneside during World War II, but the theme is timeless - a child alone in the adult world, living off his wits and learning how to survive on his own. I thought that I was getting Paul Theroux’s book with the same name, but no, it was a child’s book by an award-winning author. The use of language is often impressive and thought-provoking but language is like a picture frame - no matter how wonderful, it can not mask a weak painting - in fact it seems to accentuate the failings of the picture.
