Two years ago, Reddit user Katweasel shared a story about her 16-year-old cat, who unfortunately had to be put to sleep earlier that week. A few days later, after walking over by the kitchen pantry, she was hit with the overwhelming odor of cat urine. A main reason I continued to be skeptical is that when my first and only dog died, I wanted so badly to see her - I felt like it was my fault she died. She was still pretty young when she started having seizures, and the medication she was on put her in a kind of blank depression. About a year later she had a stroke of sorts but I didn't have a way to get her to the vet until my mom came home some hours later, and she died in the car on the way there. I have never felt so guilty about a pet's death, or so responsible. But as much as I tried to see her, tried to find her outside running and playing or inside the kitchen protecting me when I was alone at night, I felt empty instead. I guess it was kind of a blow after the visit from my cats. Anyway, he was with us for about a year when he suddenly disapeared. Being a male, I figured he had just taken off, perhaps taking up with another family as cats often do. Is having a pet ghost such a bad thing? As long as they aren’t violent and just want to take up space in their own dimension, we say… let them live their non-lives. Cats (and dogs) have the physical ability to see certain wavelengths and color spectrums that people cannot. Perhaps this “remnant” of the dearly departed remains behind—or in fact, the spirit portion remains visible for felines as well as ultrasonic sound communication.

One example of this is, a cat names Oscar who lives in a nursing home in Rhode Island. Oscar is known for predicting a patient’s death, and will climb onto the dying patient’s bed and stay with them until they die. Sometimes, Oscar will stay with the patient the day before death, or even a few hours beforehand. Oscar’s behavior sometimes helped notify the staff of a dying patient, and even proved the staff’s predictions to be wrong at times. Ballechin House, Perthshire, is known for a number of ghosts, including the return of it’s former owner, Major Stewart, in the form of his favourite spaniel in the late 19th century! The Major had been very fond of dogs and owned 14 when he died. Unfortunately, his heir did not share this love, and shot all the dogs in an effort to get rid of the ghost. This made the apparitions more frequent, and not much could be done to stop it. Apparently after speaking with Discovery, I am not the only health care professional to report this and it is quite a common occurrence within hospitals, hospices and care homes. I feel a cat jump on the bed and look from my book to see who it is. No cat. But there is… something. The best I can describe it is as distorted pixels. Its a small mass that looks like when they censor something on T.V.” However, it is required to progress through this dialogue upon feeding the ghost cat to obtain the pet and see the dialogue: "The ghostly sole seems to dislodge the cat's dinner from last night, as he chokes up a ghostly rat."My boyfriend and I have been living in our apartment for almost two years now. We’ve seen a cat in our apartment, but not too often. My boyfriend has seen it full figure and come walking to him, I’ve only seen the end of its tail and out of the corner of my eye. We kind of just accepted it as our spirit cat and so did my living cats. However, they don’t always appear as human. They’re often simply described as supernatural entities in general, and have indeed been reported to appear in the shape of animals, including cats. One early famous example is a 1925 family portrait taken by Major Allistone in Clarens, Switzerland that documented a woman restraining an infant from climbing out of a baby carriage, with an older boy standing in front holding a stuffed bunny in his left hand. But in the boy’s right hand appears the face of a white kitten—except that white kitten had died several weeks earlier. There’s also the possibility of residual hauntings. These aren’t intelligent hauntings. Rather, they’re a hypothetical paranormal phenomena akin to environmental recordings. A kind of echo in time and space, where the actions and characteristics of a person or animal (or perhaps even a place in general) are repeated long after they’ve passed on. It’s believed that such residual hauntings may be the result of traumatic events or perhaps electrical anomalies.

Not sure what your beliefs are that won't allow you to open your mind, but let me just say this: the world is big and we understand, even in this modern age, very little of it. To think that we have total knowledge of our planet in 2007 is as arrogant and short-sighted a notion today as it would have been in 1000 BC. There is evidence of things occurring here that are unexplainable with contemporary modes of scientific instrumentation. Perhaps someday we'll be able to more aptly explain these things we conveniently label "ghosts," but for now, raw experience and "faith" are all we have.

More recent examples abound and include pictures and videos posted on the Internet. For example, one family admired and took pictures of a neighbor’s flowers and captured the image of a cat in the window—only the family doesn’t have a cat, so just who was the ghostly feline and (perhaps more importantly) why did the cat allow him/herself to be photographed? He looked at me, nodded his head and disapeared and since that time, I have not had an encounter with him. You can look at this situation one of two ways. It could be absolutely horrifying and you will spend all of your time researching ways to remove the animal spirit from your house or you could accept the fact that you have a pet ghost. Feeding the cat will display the message dialogue: "You feed the cat a ghostly sole. He seems to enjoy it."
