Several of Miranda's adult novels, including All the Missing Girls and The Last House Guest, were published by Simon and Schuster. [9] Several of her young adult novels were published by Penguin Random House [10] and Bloomsbury Publishing. [11] Young adult [ edit ] I did follow the bread crumbs correctly this time and identified the culprit. I don't think it was that obvious, but who knows, because I'm usually terrible at nailing the baddie. Just tooting my own horn (toot toot!). This book comes at a time when true crime and societal fascination with tragic stories is at an all-time high. As a group, discuss the true crime phenomenon. What drives it? Has fiction contributed to this rise? And—as they promised long ago—each survivor will do whatever he or she can do to save one another. Won’t they? If you like mysteries that keep you guessing and that are a pleasure to read—give this one a shot. Recommended.

This is story of nine survivors! They were innocent high school kids on the school trip, surviving from van accident, living with guilt, harboring secrets, celebrating their lives by meeting at the cabin called the Shallows: as the townies also call “ The Ghost House”. Once upon a time in 2019, I read Megan Miranda( The Last House Guest) and I liked it so much that I swore I would read more of her books. Sadly, I have made this promise to several other authors. 🤷‍♀️ Here I approach 2023 humble and asking for a second chance.Ten years on, the sole survivors of that awful night have been meeting at a beachfront property on the anniversary of their rescue. It is a support group of sorts, a way to get each other through the memories of that horrific tragedy ... I had my eye on Russ (and also fisherman Will) from the get-go. Mostly because it was the same plot twist in a book I read in 2022. They made a pact to let the bygones be bygones, not talking about the tragic event which changed their lives forever! They had used an older picture—when his face was boyishly full, blond hair just long enough to catch a breeze, tan skin and brown eyes and a smile I wasn’t sure I’d seen in over a decade. So different from the last time we’d been together, one year ago, at our meeting place in the Outer Banks. The SEVEN who remain gather at the property, and the charade continues, with sand, swimming, and S’mores over a sizzling campfire until ANOTHER one from the group disappears. Can they really trust one another?

Megan Miranda delivers another expertly crafted thriller that oozes with suspense and atmosphere. At this point, I think I'm what the young kids call a stan for Miranda. I've enjoyed all of her adult books, only rating one of them a 3 star. This thriller follows Cassidy’s perspective with alternating chapters from the survivors at the time of the accident. In the comments below, Susan asks a good question: why was Clara excluded from the survivor’s settlement – the money paid out by the school to the victims and the survivors. First, it’s a challenge when there is a large cast of characters to really get to know any of them, and with the exception of Cass, that is the case here, as well. As a reader who enjoys strong character development, that is one reason that this one missed the mark for me. We learn the bare minimum about each, so I never grew to care for or empathize with any of them.

Shouldn’t I have felt it somehow? That bond, connecting us all across time and distance? Ian, I’m sorry— There’s always a tendency with writers of Megan Miranda’s caliber --- those who never disappoint, never stagnate, never let you down --- for readers to say that each new novel is their best yet. However, in the case of THE ONLY SURVIVORS, that statement is truer than ever." Ten years ago, returning from a high school service project, two vans were in a tragic accident and only nine students survived. Megan Miranda is a pro at creating atmosphere, misdirection and suspicion with her words. The Only Survivors reminds me (just a wee bit) of her earlier YA thrillers - but with grownups messing everything up instead. The sense of dread keeps building until you just can't put your ereader down. Forget that deadline or the dishes: you gotta know whodunnit!!! Grace saw Ben arguing with Mr Kates, driver of the first van. It seems like Ben cheated. Ben suggests that Mr. Kates has an inappropriate relationship with Grace. The group drew straws for someone to attempt to get to the trapped students. Jason lost the draw, and was swept away by the rising river current. Three other students (Ben, Trinity, and Morgan, died at the scent).
