Undoctored is Adam Kay's funniest and most moving book yet—an astonishing portrait of a life in and out of medicine, from one of Britain's finest storytellers.

Zacznijmy (a właściwie prawie skończmy) od tego, że w ogóle każdy człowiek, ale… „każdy lekarz ma jakieś dziwactwa…” The mood music isn’t that there’s going to be a huge amount of extra money going into the NHS anytime soon, what with everything going on. So God bless everyone who’s working in the NHS at the moment. I really don’t know how they’re doing it.’ By law, the lab results are your property and the doctor and staff are operating out of ignorance. You should apprise them of this fact. If you still encounter resistance, a call to the state medical board can turn the tides, as the board can provide a brief statement that you can present to the doctor and the staff. Recent changes in regulations also allow you to obtain lab results directly from the laboratory facility itself, whether or not your doctor approves. Thanks to regulations finalized in February 2014 by the US Department of Health and Human Services that replaced a hodgepodge of uneven state-by-state rules, laboratories in all 50 states are now required to comply with your request to provide results to you without your doctor’s permission or knowledge. One of my closest friends left medicine school after 3 years and it is funny how the society looked at him as if he was doing the biggest atrocity out there while everyone in the school itself were pretty sure it was the best decision -and they were all a bit envious-

I think Adam’s approach to life and his writing will divide people- of course, I am not defending any commentary that does show disregard, but I do think this book allows us to see a human side that is sometimes forgotten in the association of the medical field. Personally I know people who are doctors (and honestly are the most interesting people I know,) but you can forget about the high stakes that come with their line of work and the impact it can have on their mental and physical health. When I was writing her dialogue, I had Harriet Walter in my head. I didn’t actually think that Harriet would say yes, because she’s Dame Harriet Walter!’

Were there any aspects of the TV adaptation that veered away from the intent you had in the book, due to trauma being censored ot subtlety lost? It's normal for an expert to have an area of expertise, of course! But when that expert thinks everything hinges on their area of expertise, it makes them seem a bit less credible. I was super excited to dive into this book because This Is Going to Hurt remains one of my favourite non fiction books of all time. While I still really liked this one, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting.

Fish oil and seafood are the only reliable sources for the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as the ideal daily intake of 3,000 to 3,600 milligrams EPA and DHA is only achievable by this route (and not with linolenic acid–containing foods, such as chia or flax, or krill oil). Behind Kay’s intensely critical voice – the one I objected to in This Is Going to Hurt, when it faced his female patients – the voice that whirrs on, presumably full time in his head, is his mother’s. Perhaps it is artistic licence, perhaps exaggeration, but he presents his mother as intensely critical, oblivious to his pain. Though medicine broke him, she yearned for him to return to it, as if she could not hear. He needed a microphone.

There is no shame in having put in your hours and your years and then going off to something else. Because medicine isn’t your defining characteristic as a as a person, it’s your job and you can’t let it destroy you.’ There is an emphasis on wellbeing in hospitals but when you dig into it, it often just amounts to a Zumba class. A recent report published by the GMC intended to improve support for the mental health of doctors but its recommendations were not taken on board by the government. People have a huge problem with seeking help. There is always the feeling that if you speak to someone, word will get out. There needs to be a culture, in medicine, that is less militaristic where people can talk openly. Juniors should be able to tell their bosses when they’re struggling, bosses should actively look out for their juniors. All staff should know where they can turn and trust they can get help that will not compromise their careers (at the moment, you are almost taught that doctors should not struggle).

I'm Interested!

It’s a major roll of the dice asking for medical advice, I’ve been out of the game a long time. All you would get are half-remembered semi-facts. And people are always disappointed when they ask about Ben Whishaw because he’s such a lovely man I can’t offer anything approaching a juicy anecdote. He’s a proper national treasure. There are millions of people who now presumably think that I look like Ben Whishaw too, and I’m absolutely happy with that!’ he laughs. Undoctored is the spark of a new movement in health that places the individual, not the doctor, at the center. His plan contains features like: On a more serious note, he reveals that the point where Whishaw as Adam goes infront of the General Medical Council and quotes the statistic that one doctor every three weeks in the UK takes their life, he is using Kay’s exact words.

Ben did the most spectacular job, he’s a national treasure. He can dance between comedy and drama and brings huge warmth to a character who is deliberately written as not always behaving the best under the circumstances he is in. If you were casting yourself, why wouldn’t you choose someone as handsome as Ben Whishaw? But if it wasn’t Ben, I suspect the answer I’m supposed to give is … Jonathan Ross. Adam Kay is witty and has a dry sense of humour that some people will love or hate. I personally enjoyed Undoctored for his charismatic uptake on difficult times that you’d never expect anyone to take the time to flesh out into writing. He does give us an insight to his life, his new relationship and how he is truly coping with his new lease of life. I quite appreciated Kay’s frankness- there is no sugar coating by all means. He puts it plain and simple and issues us with stark warnings about the process of diving into a new career path when the other one mentally and physically depleted him. Coming out to his family (I was confused about this because I thought he had already come out and that H, his partner from This Is Going to Hurt was a man, I think I probably got the TV show mixed up)As I said before, I liked Kay’s previous books but in my opinion this was the most well written one because it showed how he improved as a writer and a comedian and the way it was edited was so well done and the flow was immaculate which made me appreciate it even more.
