Acetone is available, though, and will work as well, this is available commercially from Chemists in pure form, as solvent for lacquers like nail polish. at work, we use solvents for removing latex from carpets. I think it is called carbon tetrachloride available from chemists... and hardware shops (but probably under a brand name!) Unlike many other rubber cements, it consists of latex dissolved in water. As such it is relatively non-toxic and so is frequently used in primary schools. It also contains ammonia [2] to stabilise the rubber solution. This is the source of its characteristic smell. Copydex adhesive can be used for repairing carpets, matting, clothing, upholstery and many other fabrics as well as general home use. Safe and easy to use, solvent free.

To clean brushes I put a few drops of washing up liquid into a plastic container, added boiling water and then dunked the brush repeatedly into the liquid. I find that the dried copydex can soon be gathered into a ball and removed. It appears to prefer its own company rather than the material it is attached to. I think that's what I like most about it.

I used to use Copydex to patch working trousers and overalls, until I could con someone into sewing me a more repair. I told my friend Steve about this, but omitted to mention that I didn't wear said items when effecting a repair. He duly slapped a healthy dose of the stuff on the patch, and pressed it down on the tear on the jeans he was wearing.
