However, the mounting ring itself is not removeable and its stub protrudes by about 12mm (half an inch) from the circumference of the barrel, even when the foot is removed. The lens itself is one of the biggest and heaviest in its class, being 94.2mm in diameter with an oversized 82mm filter thread, rather than the more usual 77mm. Weighing in at 1,805g, it’s around 300g heavier than most current competitors. Performance That the focus ring does not smoothly transition into the barrel section in front of it seems like a missed opportunity. What REALLY turned me off about the lens was the tripod foot. Within the first minute of having it on the camera, I had painfully pinched a finger between the body and foot. Reason? The foot is less than a half inch away from the body. What's it so close to? The zoom ring... Seriously, try it before you buy it. I'm sure it takes good pictures but if it's ergonomically not practical, I don't like it and wouldn't enjoy using it. Maybe the offer an alternative foot that is further from the lens, not sure. And of course it IS removeable, but... Image stabilization has now been available in camera lenses for a long time, but I still love this feature and I often count on it making a clear improvement in my images. When using this lens for portraits, I love the bokeh -- my wife thinks it is a bit harsh, though. I will agree that it's no 85 f/1.4 ...

Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Nikon FX

More than six years have elapsed since the announcement of Sigma's first Global Vision series lens. At 200mm, the wide open center-of-the-frame performance is not quite as good, but this lens is still performing at least nearly as good as the best from an overall perspective. Distance information is relayed to the camera, so the Nikon body can do all the advanced exposure-related stuff with this lens. But this is true for all alternatives too. [+]There's a lot to love about this lens. With excellent detail at even wider apertures, great control over chromatic aberrations, very effective image stabilisation and prompt autofocus, it delivers what the professional demands at this level. Great build and weather sealing make it even more competitive, as does that price tag. It's not a cheap lens, but you get an impressive performance for the money.

Matching the optical characteristics of the lens, this function performs in-camera corrections of peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, distortion, and more, to further enhance image quality.

We'll take a closer look at the extreme full frame corners next with the extreme top-left corner featured in these results. The longer the focal length, the more obvious the improvement seen at f/4 becomes and the more that improvement is needed over the f/2.8 performance. Most of the on-lens controls are grouped in a panel on the left side of the barrel. The Focus switches allows for full-time autofocus (AF), autofocus with manual override (MO), and manual focus (MF). There's also a limiter, so you can set the autofocus system to cover the full range or distant subjects (beyond 3 meters) only. To reduce the minimum focus distance and thereby increase the maximum magnification, mount an extension tube behind this lens. Image quality is simply fabulous, thanks partly to the inclusion of no less than nine top-grade FLD (Fluorite Low Dispersion) elements and an SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element in the optical path. Sharpness and contrast are excellent, even when shooting wide-open, throughout the entire zoom range. Meanwhile, chromatic aberrations and distortions are negligible, and there’s very good resistance to ghosting and flare.I use AI-Servo (continuous) focusing mode for shooting sports, but sometimes like to shoot a focus-and-recompose images such as a portraits during the event. That might be an easier question to answer if the word "not" were inserted before "useful" in the previous sentence.
