Description

An arresting collection of contemporary fiction at its best, these stories explore a vast range of subjects, from love and deception to war and the insidious power of class distinctions. However clearly spoken, in voices sophisticated, cunning, or na ve, here is fiction that consistently defies our expectations. Selected from thousands of stories in hundreds of literary magazines, the twenty prize winning stories are accompanied by essays from each of the three eminent jurors on which stories they judged the best, and observations from all twenty prizewinners on what inspired them. These are all relatively short poems. They're meditative and Thoreau-like. They're pastoral, nature-conscious, and, as you might expect, observant of every personality of the seasons, aware of every type of wingbeat and footpad of life there. These poems are always sensitive to the passage of time, and they're modest and grateful for the world. In recent years the poems have become more spiritual. Thinking about Berry's awareness of and ability to articulate the wholeness of existence, it's no wonder he's been compared to the great Roman poet Horace.

While it can be a bit corny, I do have a huge soft spot for ole Wendell. Those who tend to enjoy religious-themed poetry will really enjoy him as well, as he has a huge collection of what he calls his Sabbath Poems, which are poems he writes about his walks he takes every sunday, and are often very religious in theme. Berry can capture nature so well, and especially the need to protect it and live sustainably to keep the world nourished and thriving so that we, too, can be nourished and thrive within it. An accomplished new series editor novelist and short story writer Laura Furman has read more than a thousand stories to identify the 20 winners, each one a pleasure to read today, each one a potential classic. The O. Henry Prize Stories 2003 also contains brief essays from each of the three distinguished judges on their favorite story, and comments from the prize winning writers on what inspired their stories. There is nothing like the ever rich, surprising, and original O. Henry collection for enjoying the contemporary short story. Over the years, he has called himself an agrarian, a pacifist, and a Christian—albeit of an eccentric kind. He has written against all forms of violence and destruction—of land, communities, and human beings—and argued that the modern American way of life is a skein of violence. He is an anti-capitalist moralist and a writer of praise for what he admires: the quiet, mostly uncelebrated labor and affection that keep the world whole and might still redeem it. He is also an acerbic critic of what he dislikes, particularly modern individualism, and his emphasis on family and marriage and his ambivalence toward abortion mark him as an outsider to the left.
