Seine Illustrationen knüpfen dort an, wo herkömmliche Kameras, schon allein wegen der unzureichenden Lichtverhältnisse 3800 Meter unter dem Meersspiegel, an ihre Grenzen stoßen; Marshalls Bilder zeigen den kompletten Bug des Schiffs und andere Ansichten, die keine Kamera einfangen kann.

Auch die Probleme, die es bei der Anfertigung des Bildmaterials zu lösen gilt, führt Cameron dem Leser vor Augen: Die Bilder, die da angefertigt werden, sind natürlich keine Fotos; eingefangen werden vielmehr Bewegtbilder.
