With the release of the movie Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Hasbro released a new set of themed Micro Machines. This second revival lasted only a year; no more sets were released after Rogue One.

One of the many Micro Machines product lines was the Insiders series. Incredibly popular in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the Insiders series featured a small vehicle inside the standard size Micro Machine. The body and chassis of the larger vehicle connected via a hinge. Opening the larger revealed the smaller, which was a different model of car. Clemens V. Hedeen, Jr. (Fun City USA / Hedeen International), Patti Jo Hedeen, Ned Cain (Fun Maker/Hedeen and Companies) There were loads of individual city sets hat could be combined to make bigger and more varied environments, but having a single set that tried to do it all was amazing. And that’s where Super Van City came in. While the Micro Machines collection is known primarily for sizing down automobiles, it has also featured several playsets including 1991's fold-out Super Van City. Licensed character products would often be fold-open heads including miniature characters and vehicles interactive with their playset environment. Micro Machines also utilized several diverse features such as color-changing cars and "Private Eyes" vehicles that even allowed one to peek inside and view an illustration of the contents. Micro Machines are a line of toys originally made by Galoob (now part of Hasbro) in the mid-1980s and throughout the 1990s. Micro Machines are tiny scale component style "playsets" and vehicles that are slightly larger than N scale.

Micro Machines were featured in the 1990 Christmas movie Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin. In the movie, Culkin's character sets dozens of Micro Machines at the bottom of a flight of stairs as a hazard for a pair of bungling burglars. This trap was also featured in the Sega Genesis game, though it's referred to generically as "Toys". Cars, planes, boats, helicopters – you name it, Super Van City has an appropriate piece of scenery for pretty much anything in your collection. There were some incredibly surprising licensed Micro Machines sets released over the years – with sets based on (sometimes very adult) franchises such as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Star Trek, Aliens, Predator and Terminator 2. Some weird, slightly more obscure choices made the jump to Micro Machines too, such as Babylon 5, Jonny Quest and Biker Mice from Mars. The Micro Machines brand was revived for a few years in response to the popularity of the similar Speedeez brand. Hasbro also opted to use many fantasy castings in the revival. The revival only lasted a couple of years. Early Micro Machines television commercials were famous for featuring actor John Moschitta Jr., who was (at the time) listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's fastest talker. As a result of his work in the commercials, Moschitta came to be known as the "Micro Machines man". [1] Maybe, but with Star Wars Micro Machines in general, we undoubtedly have one of the very best uses of the tiny vehicle and playset concept. Folding up neatly as a very 80s camper van, Super Van City was an absolutely magical toy. It genuinely did feel like a micro sized city, which somehow found space for kids to use all of their Micro Machines vehicles.

It was an absolute joy to play with and meant you could engage in all manner of creative play if you had a selection of vehicles on hand.

Is it a cop out to feature an entire spin-off toy line of Micro Machines in first place on the best Micro Machines toys list?

None could compare to the might of Star Wars, which never met a licensing or merchandising opportunity it couldn’t make its own and absolutely dominate. It was beautifully done and even though – like all of the other licensed sets which featured character figures and selections of vehicles from movies or TV shows they were based on – the scale was incredibly inconsistent, it didn’t matter.
