Nike puts most of their efforts into road running gear, but their React Pegasus Trail 4 is a quality, max-cushioned option for trail work. To protect against protozoa, bacteria, and even viruses, there is a wide range of water filtration and purification. Secure lacing, a gusseted tongue and an upper that combines quick-drying mesh with tougher rubber around the sides, all add to a confidence that this is a shoe that will last on the big miles. It all adds up to one of our favorite shoes of the year for distances of about 50K or less (we also wore the Catamount 2 during a 50-mile race but wished for more cushion in the latter half). It's got a bit more flex in the forefoot and more underfoot feel than the v6, too, which gives it more versatility.

Sandals – padded insoles, easy fastening and a wider fit ensure you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to look good. This traction combined with lightness meant that testers felt ‘goat-like’ on uphills, while descending was a ‘revelation’ with impact lessened on tired joints.Many of these comfortable work shoes have slip-resistant soles, which keep you safe in environments where spills might occur and you could encounter wet floors. So even if you're training for a road marathon, there's plenty of advantages to getting off the pavement on a regular basis. If you’ll be running steep terrain or over rocks, roots, or other rough ground, the stability, grip, and underfoot feel will be a disappointment, even for new runners. But as with all Peregrines, the 13 is not our favorite fit—they’ve always been slightly wide and prone to slipping at the heel—and the new lacing system makes it difficult to get a good lock.
