Description

The native Ojibwe people who lived in the area were already extremely familiar with the tree before the Europeans arrived. They believed that it harbored evil spirits, and that it would kill any canoeists who passed near it on the lake. The Ojibwe would leave gifts for the tree, such as tobacco, before setting off on journeys. While the Europeans may not have shared the same superstitions, they still knew a scary tree when they saw one, and many of them continued the gift-giving tradition. Since the eleventh-century we find mentioned the use of the divine wand for discovering springs and treasures. It is a forked branch of hazel, alder, beech or apple. This is how it should be held. One of the forks of the branchis held, not too firmly, with the palm of the hand turned up. By holding the other fork of the branch in the other hand, the main stem will be parallel to the horizon. The holder advances gently towards the place where the water is suspected to be. When he arrives there, if water is below, the rod turns in the hand and bends towards the earth like a needle which has been magnetised. Such is the account of those who believe in the virtue of the Divining Rod. They add, that it has also the property of discovering mines, hidden treasure, thieves and fugitive murderers.” Rowan was among the plants incorporated into May boughs and brought into the house on Mayday. The mystic properties of the rowan tree have been somewhat feared by witches, according to legend, as it was believed to hold powers which counteracted the effect of negative energies. A branch placed in a house on Good Friday, or placed in a bed, was said to ward off such forces. Wearing a sprig of the rowan also protected against charms. We carry spell oils, candles, books, crystals, Tarot/Oracle/Affirmation cards, essential oils, herbs and much more.

The tree seems to have been rare in the Highlands for a long time. Even so Clan Fraser adopted a sprig of yew as their clan badge.

Those that step on my ice know they have made a grave error. (Cryoni) (Note; Cannot give Preceding Chill) The folklore surrounding elder is wide and often conflicting. It was thought that if you burned elder wood you would see the devil but if you planted one by your house it would keep the devil at bay. Apparently, it could charm away warts and vermin. The owner is lovely and very helpful and hardworking. I got to hear her story on how it started up as well as all kinds of info about the shop and its classes! Trees have been revered as sacred monuments since the prehistoric era. Our ancestors may well have been inspired by their annual cycle of decay in the autumn followed by a luscious rebirth in the spring.

One of Conchobar mac Nessa's residences at Emain Macha, Cráebruad, has nine rooms lined with red yew. The agnomen of Cáer, the swan maiden, is Ibormeith [yew berry]. In George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, one of the main religions, that of "the old gods" or "the gods of the North", involves sacred groves of trees ("godswoods") with a white tree with red leaves at the center known as the "heart tree". In the forests of New Zealand is a tree said to be a relic from the origin of the world itself. In the beginning of time, there were two great beings. One was the sky, Rangi, the father of all things. He lay with his love, Papa, the mother of all things. They had many children, who rested between them in darkness, not knowing about light. One day, however, the parents stirred and allowed a small beam of light to shine on the children. As soon as the youngsters found out about light, they wanted more. In Denmark the tree was associated with magic. A dryad called the Elder Tree Mother was supposed to live in its branches. If you wanted to cut the tree to make furniture from its wood, the Elder Tree Mother must be asked permission first. If she wasn't, you ran the risk that she'd follow and haunt you. The yew’s toxicity has somewhat limited its practical uses to humans, though a homoeopathic tincture is made of young shoots. The berry flesh has been used by herbalists to treat a variety of ailments including cystitis, headache and neuralgia. In more recent times scientists have discovered that extracts of yew have anti-cancer properties. Ziffer, Irit. "WESTERN ASIATIC TREE-GODDESSES". The Celts will also have been familiar with the toxicity of the tree’s needles in particular. This may have further contributed to its connections with death. Shakespeare was familiar with these qualities when he had Macbeth concoct a poisonous brew. The deadly drink included “slips of yew, silvered in the moon’s eclipse”. We’ve mentioned Mill Ends Park before, but this record holder for the world’s smallest park has seen drama since then, and it’s all focused around its (rather small) mystical tree.
