Description

I like it – it ’s fun and enjoyable. I like the games especially the card games. I am better at spelling.” Know how to administer the Morph Mastery assessments and how to use them to set targets, plan and review progress This course will focus on the recommended Morph Mastery intervention structure of 3 x weekly 30 minute lessons for up to 3 pupils, but you’ll come away with the skills and knowledge to enable you to adapt the strategies to your setting.

The intervention follows three colour coded ninja-like Morph Master characters; Prefa, Root and Sufa, who represent the three core components of morphology (prefixes, root words and suffixes) and use their sceptres to craft words.

Who is this course for?

Understanding the morphological regularities in English helps to support both spelling and reading comprehension, yet there are few practical interventions that take a morphological approach. Morph Mastery combines this exciting new approach with tried-and-tested teaching methods that work. The activities in this book follow three engaging ninja-like characters, Prefa, Root and Sufa, who represent the three core components of morphology (prefixes, root words and suffixes) and use their sceptres to craft words. Any participant attending the course can buy the book at a 20% reduced price, details will be sent to you once you have booked your place . Target Audience

You’ll need allocated time to do the practical tasks between sessions - some of this will be reading/planning and some will be with your learner - approx 1-2 hours between sessions Learners have fun with “word agility” games and “word mastery” investigations of words, as well as other interactive activities in three 30 minute lessons each week. This has been one of the best courses I have attended in long time. Most courses provide too much theory. This provided good practical advice on how to teach and adapt the information and games for my learners. Morph Mastery, a Morphological Intervention for Reading and Spelling Difficulties, by me, Louise Selby, was published the same month as the pivotal Department for Education (DfE) Reading Framework, July 2021. Since then the two have worked side by side beautifully, but there is still some misunderstanding about how Morph Mastery complements a systematic synthetic phonics approach. Let me explain.

The Problem with Phonics

An overview of Morph Mastery as a structured, multi-sensory, cumulative and targeted intervention, looking at its place in the Code of Practice and the National Curriculum for English One of the things that has surprised me is that the intervention has supported my learner to develop his vocabulary, not just his spellings. It ’s bringing words to the fore that he wouldn ’t usually use.” Morph Mastery is an intervention for learners aged 9 – 13 with spelling, reading and vocabulary difficulties. It’s research & evidence based and adopts methodology suitable for learners with dyslexia and specific learning difficulties: it’s highly structured, cumulative, multi-sensory and personalised. It can be delivered by a teacher or an experienced teaching assistant, as long as it is overseen by a teacher/SENCO. It’s also a lot of fun and very well received by both learners and adults. Research shows that morphology is not only effective in good quality first teaching as a complement to phonics, but also in intervention to support literacy difficulties as an alternative to traditional phonics intervention. This introduction to morph mastery is presented by Louise Selby. Suitable for educators and parents. Introduction The Reading Framework recommends systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) in the early teaching of reading. SSP is based on phonology, the system of language by which words are made up of units of sound.

It was great to be able to see videos of the assessments and games in action. This helps me understand how they should go.

Morph Mastery can be used in a number of ways; it’s a complete, intensive intervention for learners with persistent difficulties in school, but it can also be used in whole class settings, booster groups and tutoring. It works as a complete approach or as an “add on” to your regular teaching. These interactive workshops will support practitioners to both use the assessments effectively and plan and deliver the lessons, with the support of your SENCO. Between each session you will have reading and practical tasks set, which you’ll have the opportunity to review during the sessions. An understanding of what is understood by a morphological approach, the terminology and methodology and what we mean by “morphological awareness” as opposed to “morphemic awareness” To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on This is a practical workshop for the beginner and non-specialist, and will cover some basic knowledge, principles, teaching techniques and games which make learning both multi-sensory and fun for the child.
