Description

Aperture ring and other control elements: The focus ring on the Tamron 70-300 can be assigned in camera to operate the aperture, exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity – or simply switched off. This is similar to the multi-function control ring on the Z-Nikkor 100-400 but there are no other control elements/buttons/switches. The F-Nikkor 70-300 has no aperture ring but sports two switches to control focus and VR mode. [+] Autofocus: All lenses in this comparison offer autofocus with built-in focus drive. Manual-focus override is by simply turning the dedicated focus ring. On the Tamron 70-300 the focus ring turns the way Nikon users are used to and it has the non-linear gearing which most lenses for mirrorless cameras offer. But although the lens has a USB-C port to connect via computer to Tamron’s lens Utility (TLU) you cannot switch between variable or linear gearing nor can the direction of the ring be reversed – as you can do with the Z-Nikkor 100-400. Focus on the F-Nikkor 70-300 works differently as it has a direct linear mechanical coupling between the focus ring and the focus action. [+]

TAMRON AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Lens for Canon

The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens focuses internally and has FTM - manual focus is always available and the focus ring does not turn during autofocus.

Every YT review I saw (minus DP Review) said great things about the lens. Maybe DP Review had a bad copy. While the Tamron 70-300mm's blur characteristics held up quite well on the 5D's larger sensor, shading was another matter. There was a full 1/2 stop of light falloff in the corners at all focal lengths, decreasing as the aperture was stopped down. One stop down cut the falloff about in half, two stops brought it down to a pretty low level. Focal ratio: All lenses in this comparison have a focal ratio which becomes smaller the further you zoom in. The Tamron 70-300 starts at f4.5 at 70mm focal length and reduces its focal ratio to f4.8 from 88mm, f5.0 from 116mm, f5.3 from 144mm, f5.6 from 175mm, f6.0 from 217mm, and f6.3 from 268mm onwards. The F-Nikkor 70-300 is a bit brighter (1/3 of a stop at the long end), same with the Z-Nikkor 100-400. [0] The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens features a popular and useful focal length range, a nice design, USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) AF and VC (Vibration Compensation) for a very affordable price.

The Canon lens most comparable to the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens is the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. There is also the risk of a problem that results in the lens and body manufacturers directing blame at each other.Proudly sporting Tamron's Super Performance (SP) badge, the lens is available in Canon, Nikon and Sony fit options, although Vibration Correction is omitted on the Sony version, due to these cameras having built-in sensor-shift stabilisation. We'd have preferred VC to be included on the Sony version, to give a choice of stabilisation methods, as with the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS. You keep on complaining about these new, smaller, cheaper, sharper lenses though. Send a few tweets about it. Get really riled up. Make yourself think that you're doing something worthy of your time.

For a budget lens, the Tamron 70-300mm performs surprisingly well, producing images with excellent resolution at shorter focal lengths. The Macro feature is a useful addition, offering an introduction to close-up photography that should yield excellent results if used within its limitations.

At 70mm with a wide open aperture, the 70-300 VC has decent sharpness right into full frame corners (the bottom corners show slight softness) At 300mm the resolution is still more than acceptable at f/5.6. Stopping down to f/8 yields images with good enough resolution to please all but the most demanding photographers. I had to spend a more-than-usual amount of time focus testing this lens - just to confirm what I was seeing. missing some shots and after 2 weeks it broke down for good and wouldn't focus at all i got it repaired

Tamron 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Review | PCMag Tamron 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Review | PCMag

The Tamron 70-300 performs very impressively well for it's price point. But between 200-300mm the performance is not good at all and does not match up to the competition. Full frame sensor format DSLR users should expect to see between 1.5 and just over 2 stops of vignetting in the corners. There's some distortion present in images shot with the Tamron 70-300mm ƒ/4-5.6, but no more than other lenses in this category. At 70mm, the distortion is almost negligible - just a slight amount of barrel in the corners. From 135mm and on, there's significant pincushion distortion in the corners. As usual, this distortion is much more significant when the lens is used on full-frame cameras such as the 1Ds Mark III. For many other 70-300 zoom lenses over the market, the resolution drops starting 200mm and onward. However, this SP lens has excellent performance across the whole zoom range even wide open. Corner sharpness is almost the same as the center. For instance, the performance at 300mm is particularly good and looks even better than its 70mm. I think the XLD (similar to fluorite) is really powerful. In good test conditions (concrete floor, indoors), I am getting a reasonable 70mm keeper rate at shutter speeds as slow as 1/10 and a not-too-bad rate at 1/8.

AF-operation of the lens in photo-mode can be heard as a very low hum from the outside but if you record video with the built-in microphone AF is practically silent.
