Speaking of characters, Sarah was definitely one of my favorites. She was headstrong and intelligent and it was so wonderful reading from her perspective. She wasn’t afraid to stand up for her friends and even herself which was something I really admired. She had amazing character development from the beginning of the novel and by the end, she morphed into this confident heroine who could take on anything thrown at her. Overall, not bad but I ain’t gonna bother reading the sequel. It has potential but the elements for younger readers show. Keep in mind even though I end up reading a fair bit of it, YA usually isn’t my cup of tea, so maybe if you’re a YA fan you’ll like it more? Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12... Through Sarah’s fictional adventures I want to illuminate this time and make it real for the reader. I want them to understand that history, to interrogate it and then question the events of today. Nobody should ever say ‘this couldn’t happen now’ because it can and it does. As the philosopher George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I had mix feeling about this Worl War I spying novel. Its about women power, betrayal, and sisterhood. The protagonist and antagonist are women. Ironically, its show how powerful women can be when oppressed in dominan man world.

There were a few German words and phrases that I wished were translated in this book, but other than that I liked the book a lot. The Captain was appropriately enigmatic and businesslike and Sarah did what she had to do to keep both of them alive and to complete her mission. The last quarter of the book was very suspenseful. Despite the fact that the protagonist was only 15, I wouldn't characterize this book as young adult. Nothing was simplified or sentimentalized. I would read more books by this author.A powerful, bleak, and penetrating portrait of an isolated young woman excelling in unimaginable danger The winners of the Diverse Book Awards 2023 have been announced, with one winner from each of the four categories announced: Picture book, Children... Secondo episodio di una storia ambientata durante la seconda guerra mondiale, in un periodo dominato da spie e doppiogiochisti, tutti in lotta per la vittoria contro i nazisti. A big thank you to Penguin Group and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this YA book about a young girl caught up in trying to prevent the creation of a bomb like the world has never seen. Let’s dive into the setting because it is one of my favourites of all time. Devil Darling Spy, like Orphan Monster Spy is set in WWII, in the midst of the Nazi regime and is a thriller, ye you guessed it, spy novel!

Dapo Adeola, Tracy Darnton, Joseph Coelho and Chitra Soundar are among the 19 authors and illustrators longlisted for the Inclusive Books for Child... Not quite implausible I suppose, the entire premise is flimsy at best. A German Jewish orphan is recruited by a British agent/spy (agent of what, exactly?) on a complete whim, admitted into a high-ranking Nazi boarding school with a story that doesn’t add up, and tasked with befriending the daughter of an eminent scientist to gain access to his lab notes. H’m. A different (for me) aspect of World War Two I hadn't read/heard much about... I have vague memories of hearing something, but most likely not in my history class in high school. It was all very fascinating to me and had me on the edge of my seat for most of the narrative. The relationship between Sarah and the captain was interesting and complex. They had no one but each other and in their reliance upon each other, found a kinship neither had expected to find. This changes drastically when she can no longer rely on the Captain who has lost his own confidence and control. She becomes the adult, the cold monster who has to make the hard decisions and complete the mission. Because if she doesn't, how many would die? She becomes a woman willing to kill hundreds to save millions. It is an excellent transition and you can see how she thinks, how she fights it and how she comes to terms with it.

I think the way that Matt Killeen portrayed racism within this book was well done, it explored the white saviour trope and how our main character Sarah has implicit bias. I also enjoyed the "letters" that Sarah wrote in her head when things were getting too much. This book was a great progression on from the first book, whilst still taking things in a completely different direction. I adore Matt Killeen's writing, he is able to evoke powerful images in my minds eye as well as allowing you to empathise will all of the characters and their emotions. Bestselling author Alexandra Christo, author of TikTok sensation To Kill a Kingdom, introduces her new book, The Night Hunt (Hot Key Books), a dark... Two years ago now I read the first in this series Orphan, Monster, Spy it was a book that I really enjoyed. For me, It took all those elements of historical fiction novels about world war to and mashed them with a sort of James Bond-like quality. It was a great adventure book that you could get lost in with all the danger and peril you would expect to find in a book about a Jewish girl becoming a spy in Nazi Germany. So now we come to Devil, Darling, Spy which came out at the beginning of this year. Which I have to admit I missed the release of until now. But upon finding out about it of course I was going to jump right in.

I dont often say this as normally I feel the first books are better, as much as I enjoyed the first I much preferred this one. In the first book, Sarah is a young girl just trying to survive. A girl with few options and hoping to do something against her enemy. She had the perfect set of skills, she is smart and confident. By the end of the story, it is clear that Sarah and the captain have only just begun in their mission to work together for the greater good and I look forward to reading what they get up to in their next venture. The plot was chillingly uncomfortable. A lot of things happens that make you gag. Or chill you to the bone. Once again we are thrust into the dangerous and absorbing world of Sarah. She is a character that I greatly enjoy being around. She can be feisty and determined, she is driven by a very singular focus and if you have read the first in this series it is all too apparent why this is. And to be honest, even if you haven't, knowing she is a Jewish girl in Nazi Germany would be enough. To me, she is a great counterpart to those very male driven spy novels about world war two. Now obviously one can not act as a spy alone, you must be part of a network for all this sort of thing to work. So queue just that, with this, we get just what you would expect from any such novel. Maybe a touch cliched but I think this book knows what it's aiming for and such they fit within the context of the narrative. Likewise are the villains of this piece. Whilst just having Nazis would I think, be enough for anyone Here they get ramped up to eleven. In this utterly gripping thriller, Sarah, the fearless heroine of Orphan Monster Spy, hunts a rogue German doctor in West Africa who might be a serial murderer. Orphan Monster Spy was, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It had a great consistency throughout the book, from the characters to the plot, the whole book was written superbly. And Devil Darling Spy was no different.
