Aesthetically, the game looks great with licensed teams and partner clubs benefitting from face scans and accurate builds. Neymar looks and plays like Neymar. Players like Van Dijk, Hazard & Messi have unique animations and play-styles which are perfectly recreated. Legends are also amazingly detailed. Presentation wise, it’s still not hitting the lofty heights of its rival and commentary needs a big revamp but the exclusivity of Juventus and Roma is a smart move from Konami, especially with the inclusion of a deep edit mode. While in some respects keeping the same structure of its predecessor, PES 2009 makes a large number of improvements, starting from the graphics, now better suited for HD image technologies. Also, the overall pace of the gameplay was slowed down, with a better AI for computer-controlled teammates as well: they will look for better passing spaces and goal routes.

A big downside with this Season Update mantra is that gameplay issues from PES 2020 haven’t been fixed. My biggest issue is the AI of the players, which all too often leaves them wandering randomly around or not moving towards the ball until it lands at their colourful Nike boot.
