The Yamazaki 12 is the closest competition to Yoichi NAS from Yamazaki. It’s a much fruitier and softer whisky. And Yoichi is noticeably peaty, whereas Yamazaki is not.

There are two types of tours available at the Yoichi distillery – Guided and Self-Guided. Both types of guide are free of charge. Please see the two sections below for details on each type. Given the chance to go to Scotland, Masataka enrolled at the University of Glasgow and became the first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky making. He took chemistry courses at the university and apprenticed at distilleries, learning first-hand from craftsmen and training as a blender — he would later become known as a master blender.Taste: Slightly oily and nicely fulsome in the mouth – starting with lemons, salty water and barley, peating is gentle, but pervasive across the whole mouth – mineral and nicely balanced with the fruitier elements. In the mid-palate, earthiness once more – soils, mosses and some well-defined maltiness. Sourness is delivered by grapefruit and sits alongside some cask influence – ginger and leather. The addition of water adds some juiciness to the fruits, a touch more sugar and really emphasises the minerality of the smoke.

Please call/fax in advance to reserve one if required. If you’re currently looking for a whisky from Japan’s Yoichi distillery, your available options are virtually limited to just one. The Yoichi Single Malt was introduced in 2016 as the sole replacement for the distillery’s entire range of age statement malts (10,12,15 & 20 year olds). Built in 1934, and located in the northern coastal town (of the same name) on the island of Hokkaido, the distillery was Nikka’s first. The located was selected by the legendary Masataka Taketsuru for its setting, which brought with it both climate and terroir features which he felt were closer to that of Scotland than any other area of Japan, and a whisky style that is inherently coastal. Masataka established Nikka because he was determined to introduce his fellow Japanese to the joys of authentic whisky. In the following decades, as his company developed and whisky became a fixture in Japan, he remained relentlessly passionate about quality. Never did he allow it to be sacrificed in favor of efficiency. In that sense, Masataka Taketsuru, Father of Japanese Whisky, a sake brewer’s son, never truly left his roots. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. If no such law exists in a Member’s country of residence, the Member has to be over 21 years old to use the Service. We have the right to ask you to provide proof of your age and/or to provide further identification to prevent underage usage and/or for any other legal or legitimate purpose. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. A distillery tour pamphlet will be distributed to visitors upon arrival. Visitors may tour the facilities freely at their own pace while referring to the guide map inside the pamphlet. You are responsible for all activities through your account.
