Throughout the storied history of Marvel, there have been multiple incarnations of organizations with their sights set on besting Earth’s best and brightest. Here’s a rundown of some notable institutions of evil! THE HELLFIRE CLUB The venom moving piece is particularly special. To be frank I’ve found the Marvel villainous pieces feel a little ‘cheaper’ made than their Disney counterparts. This piece however has a lot of detail and looks pretty impressive. Although it still feels lighter than Disney movers it is weightier than other Marvel movers and it just looks overall like more attention to detail has been included. Prince John’s goal is kind of boring—he just has to start his turn with 20 Power tokens, so everything the player does is just about gathering money. It’s not necessarily easier to play, just on the dull side.

Venom’s objective is to use his symbiotes to merge with Spiderman, essentially you need to find Spider Man, move him into your domain and then use your allies to cover him in enough symbiote tokens to overpower his strength. These games are exceptionally reading heavy and the strategy is very difficult for younger players to grasp. In fact, even some older players might struggle with it.

Twisted Ambitions

Mother Gothel wins with 10 Trust tokens, which can be earned in various ways, usually just one at a time, but can also lose them when the Rapunzel card, which can never be removed and moves one space to the right on each turn, reaches Corona. The flip side though is that more players means more time to play. The game says it takes about 20 minutes per player which is relatively accurate though it can easily take more. (Our 2 player games typically ended up taking about an hour or more depending on which characters we were playing.) We find that Marvel Villainous begins to wear out its welcome at the 40 minute mark for our group so playing it with a full four players isn’t something that necessarily benefits every aspect of the game. There can be a lot of downtime between turns which means a lot of time to let your mind wander and get bored. Can kids play? In Star Wars TM Villainous : Power of the Dark Side, you’ll play as Darth Vader TM, General Grievous TM, Asajj Ventress TM, Kylo Ren TM, or Moff Gideon TM. Whether you're wielding the Force, commanding an army, or using stealth to infiltrate your enemies' hideouts, use your sinister influence and unique abilities to manipulate events in your favour. Explore your sector to earn credits, recruit allies, deploy ships, and set obstacles in the way of your opponents as you fulfil your dark destiny. Achieve your unique, story-based objective before the other Villains to win! Once you have used all the actions you can or wish to use on your turn, play passes to the next player.

Hook must defeat Peter Pan at the Jolly Roger location, which means getting the Peter Pan card out and then moving him three spaces to the left over the course of several turns. The best part about playing Hook, however, is how many opportunities you get to add actions to your domain by playing certain Item cards, making your domain more flexible. When a Hero appears in Hela’s domain, the player puts a Soul Mark token on it; when Hela vanquishes that Hero, the player gets the Soul Mark. You win with Hela when you have a combination of eight Soul Mark tokens or Ally cards at the location Odin’s Vault. The player pawns look nice in play and feel great in hand. We also really enjoy the illustrations for each character and their cards. Various cards will instruct you to lose or gain Power, resulting in the player returning or taking the listed number of tokens to or from the Vault. When playing within the Villainous universe you vanquish a hero (or within the Marvel system clear a global event) at a cost. The player who does the vanquish loses the ally, and any item cards, used to perform the action to the discard pile in the process. However, Venom’s allies, such as Lasher, Riot or Agony can have symbiote tokens placed on them adding a unique element to gameplay. Instead of discarding an ally when used in battle if they have a symbiote token on them they can discard this token instead, losing a little bit of their symbiote but not dying as it were. This is really cool because if you protect your symbiote allies with enough symbiote goop, if you like, you can defeat heroes without losing valuable ally cards. SlanderI’d recommend passing on Marvel Villainous (or Disney Villainous) for kids any younger than 12 or 13.

Summary Another difference is the specialty cards which I guess have replaced conditions in the Disney Villainous series. When activated these can give you extra abilities that could come in really useful for example being able to pay power to place symbiote tokens from the pool on allies in your control. Only One Can Dominate This World When determining a character's total Strength, you must include all Strength tokens that have been placed on that character. When a character is removed, defeated, or otherwise discarded, the Strength tokens are returned to the Vault. I don’t really have any complaints on the components aesthetic wise. Maybe I need to play this character more, but I find the gather ingredients/brew poison mechanic, used both to win the game and to defeat heroes, a little too cumbersome.

Both Adam and myself were pumped and looking forward to this one since it was announced. Which Is why it is so sad to say that we were largely disappointed by it and cannot recommend it. Unclear Rulebook and Card Wordings I am sure I saw The Great Mouse Detective as a kid, probably more than once, but I don’t remember Ratigan, and don’t care for the way his Objective works—if you play the card The Robot Queen but another player manages to discard it from your realm, your entire Objective changes.Taskmaster’s Objective is the good kind of difficult—get four Allies with total Strength of 5 or more at any location, in your own domain or anyone else’s.
