Since debuting its flagship Serato DJ controller, the DDJ-SX, about a full year ago ( read our complete review here), Pioneer has unleashed a spate of new controllers for just about every use case scenario, from the iPad-centric DDJ-WeGo2 to this Serato DJ accessory controller, the DDJ-SP1. The SP1 also includes Velocity Mode which allows the DJ to control the volume of the samples dependant on how hard the pads are hit.

The layout is similar to Pioneers’ well known controller range for ease of use and familiarity amongst DJs.I've been looking for a companion controller for Serato to control the application while I spin otherwise on an all analog setup. Designed to free up lots of the controls of Serato when using it as a DVS system, the DDJ-SP1 is the first such controller from Pioneer DJ. And, if you subscribe to the Creative plan, use Cloud Library Sync for seamless library management across multiple devices, and easily make custom versions of tracks in Edit mode. While you can potentially use the DDJ-SP1with virtually any software, as long as you know how to map things out according to the templates provided, Pioneer created this machine for Serato. Whether you opt for the iPad-centric DDJ-WeGo2 or an accessory controller like the DDJ-SP1, there’s something for everyone.

Probably most critical to the entire unit, the SP1’s eight backlit rubber pads per deck utilize function buttons to access an impressive 8 modes of pad performance. The DDJ SP1 comprises some of the most important effects deck and performance pad controls available from sections on the DDJ-SX. It won’t unlock Serato DJ on its own, but it does include Serato Video, and the ability to control it. The DDJ-SP1 works alongside the rest of your musical setup, rather than being a standalone controller or mixer. In multi-effects mode, the 1-3 buttons and encoders work to turn effects on/off, select the effect from a list, and adjust effect amount.

The SP1 features a wide range of dynamic performance controls, allowing for truly expressive hands-on performance. The DDJ-SP1 is very compact but its buttons and knobs all feel very durable and can probably endure intense playing and travel. A single fader knob in the middle controls the volume, three knobs on both sides for controlling FX parameters and a BPM jogwheel make up the main controls of the DDJ-SP1.
