The RMT union said it would meet rail bosses for fresh talks on Wednesday. But, the BBC reports, even if an agreement were reached, it would not stop Thursday’s planned strike, but that with 48 hours’ notice it could potentially prevent disruption on Saturday. The rail industry and British Transport Police (BTP) work in partnership with Samaritansto reduce suicides on the railway. Our suicide prevention programme includes training railway employees and BTP staff to look out for and offer support to people who may be considering suicide and working within the wider community to de-stigmatise suicide and promote help-seeking behaviour. To date almost 16,000 rail staff and BTP officers have received suicide prevention training.

Boris Johnson and Grant Shapps in particular are playing politics with people’s lives, as they pretend to be innocent bystanders to the dispute. Government ministers now directly set and agree the budgets and strategic policies of the rail companies, so they cannot simply wash their hands of any responsibility: rail managers have only modest leeway in their negotiations. Yet, thanks to parliamentary questions asked by my colleague Sarah Olney, we know ministers haven’t met with the RMT to try to stop these strikes, for well over a month. Amid widespread industrial action across rail services, postal workers are also set to vote over whether to strike in a row over pay, it was announced today. More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers will be balloted in the coming weeks on whether to launch a campaign of industrial action.

Two-thirds said the government had not done enough to avoid the strikes, while 61% say the same of the transport secretary, Grant Shapps. How people act when they are struggling to cope is different for everyone – people may seem distant or upset, but suicidal thoughts are often temporary – so if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and try and start a conversation. Whether that’s on a journey home from work as we start to travel more or someone you may pass in the street – any one of us could have an opportunity to save a life. Let’s start a conversation and work together to prevent suicide.”TOCTalk Live runs 1:00pm – 2:30pm, giving attendees ample opportunity to visit the exhibition and conference elements too! Whilst during pandemic restrictions, people said they made small talk with neighbours they hadn’t spoken to before and with strangers at the supermarket (both 37%).* We still found time to smile and laugh, too, discussing the Whitney Stakes, analyzing the electrifying results of Fasig-Tipton Saratoga and struggling to remember how our yearling naming contest worked, even as we announced the winner.

We have a cost-of-living crisis, and it is unacceptable for railway workers to either lose their jobs or face another year of a pay freeze when inflation is at 11.1% and rising. This week on Rail Talk, Joe Bianca and Jon Green held an informal therapy session to cope with the devastating losses of Maple Leaf Mel, Ever Summer and Sopran Basilea at Saratoga. They also gave appreciation for how, through tragedy, the outpouring of support for the fallen and their affected caretakers displayed the best of this community, and hoped that kind of love will help light the way forward. Small Talk Saves Lives encourages passengers to notice what may be warning signs e.g. a person standing alone and isolated, looking distant or withdrawn, staying on the platform a long time without boarding a train or displaying something out of the ordinary in their behaviour or appearance. There is no single sign or combination of behaviours that mean a person is suicidal but, if something doesn’t feel right, the message is to act. The two dove into the rich world of racing and breeding in Australia/New Zealand and why those countries’ exports do so well on the world stage, Andrew’s maiden voyage to Saratoga, his random support of the Cincinnati Bengals and much more. For the deepest pedigree dives, Andrew will return in special Pedigree Corner segments of the Rail Talk podcast. The RMT and Unite are also holding a separate 24-hour walkout for London Underground workers on Tuesday, which will cause huge disruption to the tube.
