I was at university whilst I was working on Little Red, so I guess going to lectures and seminars were a bit of a distraction – but in a good way!
Also group critiques were a large part of my studio time at university but they were also helpful in refining my story.

As for what I’d do differently, that is a tough question. I think artists in general are always looking for ways to improve and refine their artwork, but since Little Red has received such a warm reception, it reassures me that I wouldn’t change a thing! Little Red is on his way to visit his grandmother on the other side of the wood. Ignoring all warnings of wolves in the wood, he removes his coat and strays from the path. That s when the greedy wolf, lurking in the wood, hatches an evil plan. He steals the little boy's red coat and hurries to the cottage to gobble up Little Red s shortsighted grandmother. And Little Red is next on the menu! But can a keg of delicious sparkling ginger beer save him from a gruesome end? With settings from the fabulously quirky 'Ye Olde Belch' Inn to grandmother's eerie old cottage, this witty reworking of the classic tale is perfectly adapted to 18th-century England and is bursting with period detail. Other titles in the series: Cinderella and Rapunzel. I try to nurture an idea as much as I can before I show others. Receiving critiques from your peers is vital in the creative process, but if you or others judge an idea before it has bloomed you might start to doubt something that could have been amazing. If you persevere, it might pay off! A bold (both graphically and narratively) reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Little Red is truly subversive in that it subverts the concept of victimhood with a deliciously dark twist. Huffington PostA witty twist on a favourite fairy tale, Little Red was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book . The perfect gift for fairy tale fans of all ages , complete with tree-shaped cover flaps, and bright, bold colours that make this a sumptuous sight to behold. I was first introduced to this book a couple months ago, in my picturebook class. We looked at the shapes, the colors, how we moved from verso to recto along with the book. For those picturebook nerds like me, this is a great example of Molly Bang's ten rules and why they work.

Little Red: A Rebel Fairytale eBook : Woollvin, Bethan

Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations. Bethan Woollvin's version [of Little Red Riding Hood] has a far darker ending - and I loved it. The talented illustrator and writer has taken a childhood niggle as her premise for this bold feminist version of the story: would our caped heroine really have been taken in by a wolf in a bad grandma disguise? ... I won't spoil the ending but let's just say Little Red wraps it up nicely (and warmly) and it has my three year old son thrilled at every read, begging for more. The TimesI started Little Red whilst I was at university in my second year of my BA in illustration. The class were given a project to create a book in six weeks – that was it, a very open brief. Quite a few people in our class decided to give our brief a bit more structure by taking the opportunity to base it around a live brief or a competition. This is when I heard about the Macmillan prize for illustration. Little Red is an important retelling of the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood, encouraging children to find joy in how the same classic story can be told in different, innovative ways. Lynn Roberts-Maloney has retold many traditional tales in novel ways, including Cinderella, an Art Deco Fairy Tale and Rapunzel, a Groovy 1970s Fairy Tale. David Roberts – her brother – has illustrated many of her texts and is a significant, award-winning illustrator also known for illustrating the Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty. Little Red is bursting with historical 18th-Century English detail and has a strong female protagonist. The perfect gift for fans of darker fairy tales, complete with tree-shaped cover flaps that make this a sumptuous sight to behold. Printed using rich pantone colours, the graphic illustrations in Little Red offer a bold, visually arresting interpretation of the classic story by Bethan Woollvin, the winner of The Macmillan Prize for Illustration 2014. About This Edition ISBN: What left me wanting more: This book is a bit scary and should not be read to sensitive children. The wolf is shown eating the grandmother, and he is definitely a scary presence throughout. Little Red is also shown wearing the wolf's pelt at the end, which may also be challenging for sensitive animal lovers. This is definitely a dark story, and it would be better for children who enjoy a touch of the dark in their fairytales. Final verdict: LITTLE RED is a simple recounting of the fairytale with a touch of horror/scary that is great for less sensitive readers before Halloween. There was no commission as such, the book began life as a project in the second year of my illustration degree. A very broad brief was handed to us, simply to make a book of any kind. I decided to use this opportunity to experiment with illustrating for children, and with narrative illustration. On reflection the project has exceeded all expectations and intentions. I only decided to create a children’s book as an experiment at university, and it went on to win the Macmillan Childrens Book Competition, amongst other wonderful recognitions! It feels very strange because I didn’t think it would ever leave my sketch book, let alone become published…urn:lcp:littlered0000wool:epub:7cace76f-390a-4f5c-8313-80bcb04e3450 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier littlered0000wool Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t4vj8bc9m Invoice 1652 Isbn 9781447291398
