The Volkswagen Touran has met most of the main challenges involved in putting together a design for a 7 seater family MPV and keeping it in the affordable price range without fudging safety, comfort, equipment, practicality and reliability. Because it's a family vehicle it doesn't absolutely have to be fast or particularly powerful. There will be things that some people would prefer to see improved. For example, the interior while laid out well does look a little functional. Inessential niceties have been sidelined to allow the designers to concentrate on what we need from a family MPV - good safety equipment, low running costs, reliable and stable drive, ergonomic layout, plenty of extra storage compartments and childproof build quality inside. In common with many other MPVs there are concerns about driving visibility as a result of the requirement to strengthen the windscreen pillars. Overall this is a successful attempt to get the maximum into a family friendly MPV at the entry level by selecting the right priorities and sticking to them. If you want more there is a good range of options and add ons and if you feel the need for more power there is always the 2.0 TDI 170 Sport. It will cost in the region of 30% more but it will get you from 0-62 mph in a brisk 9.1 seconds and has a passenger quietening top speed of 132 mph.
