About this deal

Battling problems in her marriage plus burn out at work, Liz decides it’s time to take the trip she’s been dreaming of ever since she was a child: hiking the Norwegian trails. Liz decided she was ready to do something different, so when she told her friends about a four-day adventure of wild hiking and camping in Norway they wondered if she was serious. I remember way back when, FictionFan recommended The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes, and that was just a wonderful thriller novella. Each of them at different times could be annoying or irritating but that's what made the story saucy, spicy and oh. With more twists and turns than a mountain path, this story will have you turning the pages at breakneck speed and keep you guessing every step of the way.

This is only the second book I’ve read of Clarke’s, (the other being One of the Girls, published in 2022) which had a similar theme around old friends; besties and frenemies. Speaking of the plot, well-written and beautifully organized, this multiple POV storyline took me on quite the ride.Don’t get me wrong, I could easily see it playing out just the way it was written, but, nevertheless, it felt a bit over-the-top all the same. Often hilarious, as you would expect any book by Magary to be, but like The Postmortal there is a real darkness and thoughtfulness to Ben's journey that will keep you engrossed. And yet again, I was thrilled to find that The Hike somehow managed to live up to all of my rather high expectations. Loved it in the beginning, but then the wild action took off, and I ended up skimming pages just to see how it all ended. Wild meets Gone Girl in this breathlessly entertaining thriller, featuring toxic characters doing terrible things in a beautiful setting.

A surprising, twisty thriller with compelling characters who are fierce but out of their depth, that keeps you guessing until the end. There was also conflict between the women; and yes some of the friendship moments were a little rah-rah and saccharine sweet, but for a popcorn thriller it worked. I' would love to see a movie of this book and please keep up the writing, I'm running out of your books to read. This has certainly been the case with ‘friends stranded in a wilderness whilst on an off grid holiday that goes wrong’ over the past couple of years. The narrative is very clever, we know early on that someone is in danger, that someone went missing a year ago, and I don’t want to say anymore as a spoiler other than this was a great twist. Ben ends up running away, stumbling upon a campsite among the trees, and suddenly he is in his twenties again, staring into the face of his old college girlfriend.
