EXCEPT when you take a woman who has just poured her heart out about living a life where people only saw her body and what they wanted from it. My own good hated me, fought me, argued with me, but I didn’t care, because I watched her slowly come out of her shell, peeling back one layer at a time, and it was stunning. each character goes through their own development - some for the better, some for the worse, but all for the entertainment. I said in my review of Glint that he reminded me of Rhysand in ACOMAF, and he continues to be amazing in this third book.

I'm perfectly happy with his end though, Auren gilding him was the best😭😭 THANK YOU, RK, FOR MAKING MY DREAM COME TRUE I'm not joking when I say I was cackling out loud JUST YES. She went from this helpless, manipulated, abused girl to this empowered woman who put an end to her abuser in the most incredible, glorious way possible. The way King Ravinger acts and just is in almost every single scene in here had my heart melt over and over again. Lu walks Auren back to the castle but they bump into Queen Kaila, who has magic that manipulates people’s voices.

The characters are interesting and the steamy scenes are not over the top or too often but they are steamy. The romance between Auren and Rip was one of the better things and I was consider rounding up to 3 stars, because I do like Rip as a character, but the more I think about this book the more disappointed I feel so nope.

Not to mention the prose - so well done, so unique, so wonderfully descriptive that I can envision this world of magic and politics and love and loss as if I am there, living in it, experiencing all that Auren does. That whole, 'I'm going to play the obedient pet and secretly plot my way out' was BS - she simply tells everyone to f*ck off and then is surprised when there are consequences.I wish they would have just stayed separate people - it makes for more depth for her to have faced multiple enemies in her life anyway. King Midas has stepped in to help rule after the death of his former ally, King Fauke, has left the Kingdom with a Prince too young to reign. I love it when the characters look like they could kill you, will actually kill you, but are also cinnamon rolls. I mean what a feat to do one of those things, but all of them while also on a mini holiday taking over another country? Those feelings were delicate, and so the sense of deep betrayal she felt (though overblown) was completely understandable when she discovered he'd withheld information and she found herself in the web of another king.
