About this deal

Apply in thin layers with a good quality varnishing brush, allowing a minimum of 3 hours drying time between coats.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. So, if you want a high gloss finish on your acrylic painting - factor in an additional week to achieve this. It’s best to use a specialist varnish brush but any wide, flat brush of the right length can be used as long as the bristles are not too soft; hog bristle is probably best but there are good synthetic options. We provide inks to many of the UK's leading offset printers and pride ourselves on our name and reputation. As a general principle though spraying finish is not always advisable anyway, as it’s unlikely to give total coverage if there is a lot of texture in your work. Our varnishes offer physical protection from knocks and dirt, plus an extra layer of UV-light protection. strong>

Please note: due to trading agreements we are unable to ship this product outside of the UK and EU. Protekta high gloss overprint varnish provides an exceptionally high gloss and abrasion resistance to the printed matter and withstands cutting and creasing. Choosing complementary oils, solvents, mediums, and varnishes for your oil painting is as unique as choosing a colour palette. Floorcloths aside, almost all paintings on canvas are varnished by brush and have been for centuries.

Please note- Varnish should not be transferred into plastic containers, as it may damage the plastic. Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish, known around the world, is considered the ultimate in high gloss finish. This means if there is a problem like scratches, embedded dust/dirt or discolouration it might be impossible to rectify without damaging the painting beneath. BUT if you make sure all doors and windows are closed - also have a bucket of steamy water in the studio to add humidity - and apply fairly speedily with a large flat soft watercolour brush - you'll get an excellent result. They also have better optical qualities, meaning they impart better gloss and depth to the painting, although you’re unlikely to really be able to notice a difference unless you do a side-by-side comparison. The only difficulty I experienced doing it the second way was occasional really tiny bubble forming. Eden, water-based varnishes are tricky to apply properly, foaming and bubbling being difficult to avoid especially when you thin the varnish with water.

Eyeburp, the gloss of acrylic polymer emulsions just isn’t that good compared to other finishes that you might have in mind. For certain works glossy finishes just don’t look ‘right’, so matt or nearly matt might be most appropriate; I often think that small paintings look a little odd when too glossy for example, the gloss seems out of scale with the work somehow, so size might be a deciding factor also. If necessary, apply a second coat of the product after drying and intermediate sanding (P 320 - 600).

The formulas are all compatible - just make sure you don't mix them vigorously as you may capture air bubbles and cause a cloudy effect. I was looking for a very glossy finish but this seems to only get to what I would consider satin, even after 3 thinned coats.
