About this deal

This is one of the functions of art, after all: to help us envision what would normally be lost to us. The only other minor issue I had with it was the use of German terms that were often never explained what they are in English. Having then built up a range of characters in the first half of the book, Deighton then spends the rest of it on the raid and its aftermath. Deighton continuously points to the experiences of German soldiers and aviators on the eastern front which creates a great deal of sarcasm and anti-Nazi commentary among those who survived Stalin’s armies.

Reader's Digest Condensed Books Halic, Time and Again,Six-Horse Hitch, Bomber, A Woman in the House (Reader's Digest Condensed Books, Vol. August Bach, for example, the Luftwaffe radar officer, begins a tepid love affair with his child’s nanny, Anna-Luisa. In all areas the author’s diligence and knowledge of air campaigns is remarkable as is his precise depictions of planes, weapons, and behind the scenes war strategy. Deighton obviously has done his homework in showing how one massive, confused attack on a German town in the Summer of 1943 devastates everyone involved from the British RAF planners and pilots, politicians, and even more the German civilian home front, not to mention just about everyone else on the German side, from the SS,Luftwaffe, to the totally innocent on the ground.

So though the reader is naturally rooting for the British aircrews, you cannot help but feel for the Germans being bombed.

Although he has written scores of novels, history and military history, and many cookbooks, Deighton is probably best known for the ten books about MI6 intelligence officer Bernard Samson. The theme music for the Ninety-Nine Novels podcast is Anthony Burgess’s Concerto for Flute, Strings and Piano in D Minor, performed by No Dice Collective. If you cannot hit power plants and weapons factories and ammunition depots with any precision, then you make a virtue out of indiscriminately leveling neighborhoods. Both these novels are much more effective at conveying the horrors of war and the ways in which people cope with them; both are darkly humorous. There is probably a mix of shame and the feeling everything is just too random to make a story seem meaningful. Bomber takes on an ever-expanding number of viewpoints, and new characters are being introduced right up to the final pages. The raid's two waves cause a firestorm that destroys Altgarten; many of the main characters on both sides die or lose those close to them. On the other hand, the experience and reaction of ordinary townspeople to being bombed by seven hundred aircraft will surely never again be portrayed in all of its forensic horror like Deighton has done here.
