The rich diversity of Hampden Estate’s rums comes, amongst many different factors, from the large array of marks produced by the distillery. Also known as SINGLE RUMS, these sugarcane spirits are batched distilled in a pot still at a one single distillery.

He was extremely knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about the history of the estate and rum making processes. Aged for a minimum of 7 years in the tropics after a long, natural fermentation, this blend of 100% traditional Pot Still marks is characterised by a high ester (Jamaican Funk) profile and tropical notes. As you approach Hampden Estate you will appreciate why the early Scottish settlers ventured here to seek their fortunes in sugar and rum. They refuse to cut corners here and make a serious case for rum being the most complex spirit in the world with every release. We are coming into Falmouth on a cruise ship next week and we really want to go out to the Hampden Estate. Hampden Estate has one of the oldest sugar estates in Jamaica and the only estate to specialise exclusively in heavy pot still rum. In 2016 the fourth pot still joined the others: built by the South African firm TNT, it also has a capacity of 5,000 gallons. Hampden Estate produces one of the most flavoursome rums in the world and anyone that tasted their DOK marque at full strength can definitely vouch for that. The bottle looks the same except now it's titled HCLF Classic, and as such, rather than a blend of Hampden's lower ester marques, this is pure HCLF (the same marque as Rum Fire) and 4 years old rather 7. It has maintained the same production methods and techniques for the last two centuries, such as the use of its own spring water, prolonged fermentation time with wild yeasts, tropical ageing, no added colorants and sugar, and distillation exclusively in pot stills. But it's been fermented for a longer time (as it says on the label), so the esters are quite noticeable, too much for my taste. Candied and jellied fruit notes develop: papaya, guava, lime, Seville orange, blood orange and nectarine. It’s quite bright and spicy, especially compared with the older version which was more on the “rotten fruit” kind of side. The Vendome dates back to 1994 and can contain 5,000 gallons (18,900 litres); it is installed on a “covered veranda” and is the only still that faces the sugarcane fields surrounding the distillery. Just to clarify the tasting notes, this rum isn’t that sweet or even sweetened, it’s just the perceived flavours. This Rum is the perfect all-rounder, a fantastic full-bodied sipping rum that also lends itself to bringing depth and complexity to mixed drinks. This is in great part due to an extremely high level of esters achieved by a very long, complex process. Learn about the 260 year old rum making process still in use today and taste our Pure Single Jamaican Rum. Comment: Layers and layers of fruit are carefully balanced by cream and a touch of dark and dirty oiliness. We believe that all the wines in our range are excellent examples of their style, and offer exceptional value for money.
