About this deal

There are just little phrases and sayings dotted about in there that are brilliantly descriptive in their very normality, like trying to cheer someone up at Christmas by letting them have first pick in the Quality Street tin! Saying all that, that was really my only minor problem with the book and this is still another fantastic piece of work from an author whose stories I only discovered last year but have grown to love and with each new book I can never wait to see what issue she will tackle next. Another strong point of the novel for me, and probably one of my favourite parts of the novel was the dialogue of the children, and particularly their interaction with the adults in the story. I'm sitting here in disbelief at how one author can make a reader experience a whole gamut of emotions, in just one cleverly crafted novel.

My heart broke for Rosie we see her battle through such an emotional storm going from having her heart broken losing the love of her life, to feeling the gradual isolation from friends and family who have been such a big part of her life almost like she is the one being punished when she has done nothing wrong. A somewhat preposterous fast-forward finds the characters 12 years older but no wiser: Lily and Ed have a son with Asperger’s; Carla is a knockout law student back from Italy; and Joe is still causing trouble from the sidelines. Her life is great, she has everything she ever wanted – a cosy home, husband Phil whom she adores, a great best mate Mel, even her in-laws are wonderful. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

I don’t think I’ll be alone when I say that from this point on I went through the emotional wringer with Rosie. This book is not groundbreaking but it does exactly what it says on the tin, and sometimes thats enough for me. I think it would also make a great book for Reading Groups; there are many topics that would be good for discussion points.Rosie is an ordinary wife and mother, loves her home and does her best to provide happy and caring environment for everyone. Socially awkward and good with numbers and data, Joe reminds Lily of her brother, and she finds herself feeling a connection with him despite her determination to keep their relationship professional. And correct me if I'm wrong but Rosie is related to Jo, Martin's wife after Poppy from Will you Remember Me? I was rooting for a happy outcome for her but at times she was frustrating and I know strength has to come from inside but she did need a bit of a shake once or twice.

How can she contemplate life without the man who has always been by her side through the good times and bad. The relationship Rosie has with her father and step-mother is an amicable one and it is quite moving how the revelation of some truths helps to rebuild it to something more between them all.

I had two false starts because I found Rosie to be the dullest person ever, it's great that she was so content with her life but gosh she was dull, if I was her husband I would have left! So I had an attitude towards Phil from the beginning, even more so after seeing that Rosie was so likable and loving towards her family. With so much heartache, sadness, loss of hope and despair, I found myself waiting for that one 'good thing' to take place that would perhaps bring Rosie back to life. OW, who decides to target the h and break up her family for no good reason and taunts the h in her hospital bed that she has stolen her husband and her children. Her jealousy at the beginning over Ed’s ex-girlfriend was a bit much, and it was only as more of the characters were revealed later on that I realized where her insecurity was coming from.
