To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Enjoyed either immediately – like gin – or after many decades of barrel ageing – like Cognac or whisky. The Nikka Yoichi single malt whisky 2 glass gift set is a delightful and thoughtfully curated set that brings together the distinct flavours of Nikka Yoichi single malt with a touch of elegance. The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose the town of Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he learned whisky-making. The distillery, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934, is renowned for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

With a background in chemistry, the young man decides to leave for Scotland, in the aim of discovering the secrets of whisky production. However, individuals who drive cars or motorcycles, arrive by bicycle, that are under 20 years old, or are pregnant or nursing cannot sample alcoholic beverages. This limited edition of the Yoichi has been finished in Nikka’s apple brandy casks and bottled in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Masataka and Rita’s marriage in 1920. This flagship expression is the best selling Japanese whisky in Europe and is a blend of Coffey Grain , and spirits from Yoichi and Miyagikyo.

Asahi Breweries acquired Nikka in 2001 since when Japanese whiskies, as a whole, have seen a huge rise in popularity across the world and has led to significant further expansion of the their production facilties to cope with demand. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and sea on the other, the distillery is located to the west of Sapporo. Yoichi (in Hokkaido) was chosen because of it was deemed to be similar in climate to Scotland, where Nikka’s founder Masataka Taketsuru trained. It offers a delicate balance of bright fruitiness and rich mouthfeel, along with its distinctive smokiness generated by coal-fired distillation. The northern island of Hokkaido is where Taketsuru came across the ideal site for the construction of Yoichi.

Born into a family of sake brewers hs path into whisky distilling came via a chemistry degree in Glasgow followed by apprenticeships at Scotch Whisky distilleries in the years following the First World War. Yoichi single malt has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the aging process. Unlike many distilleries producing singles in Japan I can't tell that the younger profile has hurt Yoichi at all, in fact as heretical as it seems to say it may even be a little bit better balanced on my palate than the youngest of their age statements were while remaining absolutely characteristic of the range.

Pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the ageing process.Later joining a company that aspired to make genuine whisky, he succeeded under its employment in producing Japan's first whisky. This rare version of Yoichi single malt is part of the “Nikka Discovery” series: an inside look at the various experiments made during the whisky making process at Nikka. In 1918, Masataka Taketsuru, son of a sake brewing family, is recruited by the Settsu Shuzo Company to produce the first authentic Japanese whisky.
