About this deal

Highly recommended, both for people interested in the other animals that share our planet, and for sf authors interested in writing persuasive aliens. Beyond Words was awarded a National Learning Disability Award for its work on stories for Covid-19 and won the Patient Information Award from the British Medical Association for our book Having a Baby. To watch wild wolves is to recognize a kindred creature by turns riveting, horrifying, and admirable.

Beyond Words is now an award-winning small charity with a growing impact, even finding new ways to reach people during the pandemic. For elephants we spend time in a park in Kenya , for wolves it is in Yellowstone National Park, and for killer whales the locus is Washington State.

Safina offers a rich and often heart-touching account of his journeys with scientists exploring the minds and emotions of elephants, wolves, and dolphins. One can never know what their true feelings are like since they can’t speak, but close analogy to the human forms is a simpler, even scientific, supposition compared to the alternative that they emerged in exalted form in humans and limited forms only in our “higher” primate cousins. Of course nobody really knows what is conveyed in the rich sonar and aural productions of Cetaceans, the howling of wolves, the recently discovered complex vocalizations of elephants in the low frequency range below human hearing, and the repertoire of gestures being uncovered among gorillas and other apes. In this emotional and scientific adventure, Safina somehow manages to produce a view of animal intelligence that is genuinely new, and truly enlightening.

A vital part of the development of each book is the involvement of people who have intellectual disabilities. They are designed to help the reader make sense of what is happening to them or someone they know who is ill.

This series now includes some 30 titles covering such diverse subjects as epilepsy, abuse, bereavement, depression, making friends, going into hospital, falling in love.

They have cooperative hunting techniques and are intensely social, while mothers contribute to the survival of the children. This includes people with learning disabilities and/or autism, people with cognitive or communication difficulties, such as Dementia, people who have difficulty with reading, including some Deaf people, and people who do not use the language of the country where they are living. Ma il libro è una denuncia spietata delle atrocità che gli esseri umani hanno commesso e stanno commettendo verso questi compagni, che ci siamo addirittura spinti in passato (ma è davvero passato? We set up book clubs that give people with learning disabilities a space to have fun, make friends and socialise.Sheila wanted people who are often excluded from ordinary life to benefit from having direct access to the books in their local library - just like Nigel was doing in his book club. Elephants are one of my favorite animals of all time, and this book opens with the author in Africa working with one of the leading experts in the field - she's been there for over 40 years and has so much experience it boggles the brain. Perhaps they're just stopping to listen, monitoring indicators of their children's well-being, family safety, and possible danger.

Our picture stories do provide information, but the main aim of the books is to open up conversations, conversations that make it possible to check for understanding, support decision-making, share past experiences, prepare for new ones, and explore feelings. The social devastation to family structure and survival is covered in examples from each species in the aftermath a losses of the matriarch. The first section will make you fall in love with elephants, so it was hard to read because every time I read the news, more elephants had been slain for their ivory. Yoshihito Niimura of the University of Tokyo offers: "Imagine having a nose on the palm of your hand. But the 150-square-mile park serves as a central watering hole for the surrounding three thousand square miles. Founded in 1989, the Books Beyond Words series of picture stories grew out of the personal family experience of the Hollins family and even today several family members remain involved in one way or another. Today the tea is on time, and over toast I have, finally, gotten round to asking Cynthia what I think is the Big Question.
