About this deal

Sometimes non-fiction is also a fantastic way to tempt a reluctant reader into sitting down with a book. This book serves as a cloud spotters guide that lets you know where clouds come from, why they look the way they do, and why they have been so fascinating to artists, poets, and even every child that has been given a crayon and a piece of paper. And nothing that happens ever matters, and none of the imagery comes to anything, and none of it leads anywhere. Nothing much happens in the relationship, just as nothing much happens at her job, but toward the end of the book there is a violent episode involving neo-Nazi punks that precipitates her departure from Berlin. The overall effect is of one of those school science videos trying embarrassingly hard to make science ‘cool’ and ‘relevant’ but succeeds only in irritating its audience.

The first two print runs sold out completely and in 2020 it has been re-printed, funded by The de Laszlo Foundation. The author, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, is not just a veteran journalist but has also been a lifelong sky watcher. For example, the sun pillar, or different shafts of bright light that stretch from the earth all the way up to the sky. The Book of Clouds is an introduction to this world – and the guide you’ll want by your side to help you understand it.

You will learn how the cloud forms, the variations on the cloud type and how to distinguish it from other clouds. Before even gifting it over to her, she decided to take a look through the pages and found it very interesting and informative herself. For several years now, this woman in her 20s has been living in Berlin, having minimal contact with her family, getting by on low-paying jobs and seeing almost no one. Some books really focus on educating you about cloud formations and also how they relate to the weather while other books give you a sense of reprieve from day-to-day life within four walls. Since it moves in a sequence, you first start learning about low clouds and then about the high stratus clouds, and finally onto any special clouds. They are a cloud expert, but you wouldn't just drop that into conversation without explaining yourself.

Even though my Four quickly lost patience for books about the weather, he enjoyed the wonderful series of Ready-to-Ready weather books by Marion Dane Bauer. The mysterious chalk scores on the wall of the underground bowling alley and the sinister outline of a missing picture on the wall of the upstairs apartment are held in delicate, suggestive balance. As a child in East Berlin, the sky gave him a sense of freedom: through the lovely image of his "cloud garden", he explains the lesson of flux he drew from cloud formations and applied to life during dictatorship and political upheaval.
