White halation filters spread the mist throughout the entire frame, whereas black mist filters keep the mist more localized with a more defined halation around the lighting. I still think they add something by smoothing the highlights from the building, and raising the dark shadows. I didn’t walk all that far with my camera—going down a few blocks on one side of the road, and then back up on the other side. Another filter that I really appreciate is the Tiffen Black Pro-Mist at 1/4, which offers a more controlled look. The effect is ever so subtle but the more the light changes in a scene the more apparent the difference becomes using the filter and I find the effect quite pleasing. With various densities, these filter softens hard edges, smooths skin tones, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. If you want to achieve a softer look with the skin tones, you can use the lower strength filter – and it should be good to go. The filter comes in a hard case that already differentiates it from low-end filters: it is comfortable to use and has a non-slip part with different notches for multiple filter sizes. Alternatively, you can even get a subtle glow with some of the modern classic lenses that use single coatings or no coatings, like the Voigtlander SC lenses and even some of my Kipon lenses produce a nice glow in some situations. It’s often difficult to retouch skins in video, so this filter is like magic, and softens skins and removes any harshness when you’re shooting people.

Currently, the maximum diffusion that our filters offer is 20% - which might be too soft for some people.
