But I have to say, the words, dreams, and message are what I will remember the most from this story. The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield is by some distance the most inspirational children’s book I’ve reviewed.Together they zoom off in their make believe spaceships made out of the bathtub or stay up reading everything about space in bed.

Chris Austin Hadfield is a retired Canadian Space Agency astronaut, engineer, science communicator, singer, and former fighter pilot. On the whole, this book was a really enjoyable read and shows children that 'dreams can come true', as Chris' childhood dreams of becoming an astronaut were achieved. And the next day when it gets dark, everyone huddles around the television and together they watch the moon landing. That spread when the family walks next door, with the full moon shining through the leafy trees, and Chris's "aliens" (fears) lumbering in the background?It’s a special feeling that somebody has gone to the effort of choosing it and it has been put together with you in mind. He helped create and host the National Geographic miniseries One Strange Rock, with Will Smith, and has a MasterClass on exploration. The moon landing is mind-boggling in itself, but something even more important catches Chris's attention – he never noticed how dark it was in space.

When he watched real life astronauts walking and jumping on the moon, it gave him a new perspective to night time and darkness. The artwork from the Fan brothers is exceptional, in particular the star fields and moonscape draws comparisons with Satoshi Kitamura's UFO Diary in that it evokes a sense of wonder of the vastness of space while maintaining an element of motion. I received a copy from Penguin Random House Canada and Tundra Books in exchange for a honest review. In astronaut Chris Hadfield's case, that's what he literally did: conquered his fear of the dark after seeing the first moon landing. One part of the creative team - with his brother Terry Fan - known collectively as the Fan Brothers.I liked the biographical information at the end, but the illustrative tone and wording of the story really let it down. I also think this book might do more to make a child afraid of the dark, than help eradicate the fear. And this book is all about embracing your wildest dreams that you can’t imagine could even be possible – and making them come true.
